  1. Today  Suffolk County Council swapped an all new LED lamp for the old high pressure sodium lamp outside our house. Looks very bright but luckily our house is in between the lamp and our backyard from which I stargaze. Let's hope in my lifetime, the Council continues to turn the street lights off at midnight.  I will let you know how I and the new lamp get on!

Sorry xtreenchaos, I am not a lighting expert. The new lamp looks like a flat panel with beads, I assume are the LED's under it. There are similar style white LED's ones further down the same road. (maybe 100 metres).

Maybe I should be thankful they are NOT WHITE outside my house as I read the white ones are harder to filter out when imaging because they use a much wider spectrum.

I found this interesting web page.

I asked the council here if they could put some sort of shielding over one street light as in the last 5 years the lamp post has grown taller than the houses ( they replaced the post) and now shines into my garden 4 houses down from the main road.

The council replied saying they cannot shield the light but they will replace it with a better one that only shines down. Two weeks later they replaced the sodium lamp with a 3x brighter LED light. My garden is so bright, when my eyes are dark adjusted I can read a newspaper there.

Over xmas the three lights closest went out. FANTASTIC, it was extremely dark. Pity the clouds didn't part. I really thought the council had heard my prayers. Unfortunately, after xmas, I heard workmen digging the road. That night all the lights were back on again :(

The street lights here stay on all night. I wish the council would turn them off at midnight as they do in other areas, if only to save some money. Or just turn those 3 closest to me off. :)
