  1. Praying for some clear Sky tonight... Iris Nebula is the one for me!!

  2. Fine Tuning Ring on the FLO website http://www.firstlightoptics.com/baader-planetarium/baader-hyperion-finetuning-ring.html
  3. Don't have a photo on hand that shows the DSLR fitted but this is the setup to use the lens visually. It has the Baader 43mm thread adaptor fitted, to this i just add the T adaptor and Nikon. The projection ring is called a 'fine tuning ring' by Baader. This allows to to adaptor the Hyperion to be a different focal length, for example adding the 14mm ring changes my 8mm to be a 6mm. This ring costs around £10 (from memory) but I don't think that's my problem since I haven't fitted it yet.
  4. That's the only Hyperion EP I have that will take my Nikon. I get the feeling there's something wrong with the spacing between the Hyperion and the sensor since I was able to get focus with the sensor closer to the EP
  5. I thought that it could be 'seeing' related but then it would be poor focus without the camera also wouldn't it?
  6. Currently I'm just trying to get it to focus LOL. I'm not using a projection piece (though I do have one of the 14mm spacer ring for the centre of the lens). Here's the strange thing, when I fit the DSLR I need to adjust the focuser and I can get it to focus (go too far and it goes out of focus again). Does this suggest there are multiple focus points?
  7. Thanks for the reply, any info is greatly appreciated. Do you find a large difference in focuser position when moving for visual to imaging? I have the baader to M43 and tht Nikon T-thread one as recommended but the [removed word] just doesn't work.
  8. I'm having problems trying to get my Nikon D7100 to focus when attached to my 8mm Hyperion. I am able to focus without issue using my eye but when I attempt to refocus after adding the camera the focus is pretty rubbish, it's still viewable but it's not worth taking an image of. I took off the adaptor that connects to the camera to allow the sensor to be closer to the lens and this seemed to improve the focus drastically but obviously that's not much of a solution. I was hoping someone else would have seen this or at least use a Nikon with the Hyperion without issue so I know I'm doing something wrong. Thanks in advance, Pete.
  9. That sounds brilliant. I had planned to use an ST80 as the guide scope but that's still a while off yet
  10. Interesting, so you add that guider to an upgraded finder scope ( I assume) and it controls the mount directly? Is it simply powered via usb or does the pc have some sort of interaction with the guider
  11. Apologies if this has been covered before, I see all of the electronics are inside IP rated enclosures, but what about the mount? EDIT: Ah it's inside a box!
  12. The problem is distance, I've pretty much accepted that unless we go for something IP based then us folk in N.Ireland are out. Also I believe CB required a license (possibly not test though)
  13. I do agree with all you say, but.... no expense, no qualifications... it's hard to argue with the logic.
  14. Linux is grand, I can setup a Ubuntu (or equiv) VM on my main server. Anyone out there experienced in the setup? I'll have a hoak for some guides online but could be useful to have someone else who knows the ins and outs
  15. Group Text is also available for Android so it's a viable option. Does anyone else want to weigh in regarding which app to use? Group Text GroupMe Google Hangouts Another suggestion?
  16. Do you think such a thing exists with free mobile app support? I certainly have the hardware here to support such a server.
  17. OK I'm with you now, My criteria would have been: Real-time Low Bandwidth (preferrably text based only) As little specialised equipment as possible Accomodates a large user base
  18. Sorry I'm not with you there, I had suggested no video (either RT or not) due to the required bandwidth. I would have invisaged text only, even audio uses additional bandwidth over text. I was originally thinking of something more social, for those who do not sit on a laptop beside their scope. For example someone getting ready for a nights viewing and checks the group to see what others are looking at. This would offer up a live group view but with the users being spread across a much wider area than a traditional club. There would also be the chance for imagers to review settings and techniques while pointed at the same target.
  19. Changed to an iOS search and found it, basically a video sharing application. Those with poor reception would struggle with something video based, even sending still images could be an issue.
  20. You got a link? When I google 'periscope android' its showing a storage monitor??
  21. Did some quick Googling and found a couple of (free) cross-platform apps that seem to offer functionality we're talking about: Google Hangouts http://www.google.com/+/learnmore/hangouts/ One drawback is it's only available for Apple & Android GroupMe https://groupme.com/ Can be used with Apple, Android, Windows Phone, Windows and OSX I would be swaying towards GroupMe due to it being useable across more platforms. Do we think everyone would have smartphones these days or are we risking excluding too many people?? Pete
  22. Perhaps there is a group messaging application already available that could work in the interrim to see how useful this will really be?
  23. LOL yes I do accept very few are secure, anything I worry about keeping confidential uses a different method of communication with some rather excessive encryption. My main objection to FB was the settings they imposed (or at least tried to) regarding their mobile app's. Full remote control of cameras and microphone without the user being alerted was the bigger one
  24. I do see where you're coming from, I'm also a fan of using current tech to complete a job where possible; however... The problem I see with Skype, telephone and email is anonymity. There is a stigma surrounding giving out contact details online that direct someone to you in such a definitive way. As you say Skype is fantastic, I use its messager feature to contact my wife and family while in work (mainly because I don't trust Facebook). Perhaps radio is not the way forward but I think a system to communicate live could be extremely useful
  25. Firstly apologies for replying to rveryone individually, using my phone so a multiquote would be too much for my tiny screen lol The SMS system could be costly as it will be tied to a network provider but I see the potential. A slight variation on this would be a basic smartphone app that would utilise push notifications, like the ISS Tracker one does.
