I need help on what equipment to buy for taking pictures of stars.

Do you mean "stars" or more general things up there among the stars? Stars will always be points, what you can do is take pictures of constellations. Recently saw good results with camera, standard lens and a 30 second exposure on a fixed camera tripod. If the other bits put a post in the beginners section.
