  1. Just been notified by the host that alpha-lyrae has been subject to at least 10 hack attacks in the last week! Who cares enough about my silly astro site to do that?

I attempted to work out how self-hosting a website work when I was a teenager. Used a mk1 raspberry pi with apache2 server and worked out how to make it public (albeit only via ip address not with a URL)

It only had a few photographs on it and some wacky CSS layout and basically 0 content. It got turned into a botnet component which I only discovered when people in my house started getting captchas when trying to use google haha.

I think the most common and basic attacks are automated, just try sites and addresses at random for common vulnerabilities like default passwords and default configurations of popular software like apache2 hoping to gain easy access to one of the millions of machines hosting amateur or small business machines to do botnet dirtywork.

Suffice to say the internet is a dangerous place!

  2. I'm getting really envious of the rest of the UK, high pressure and transparent skies.  In  Lowestoft wall to wall cloud and cold for days on end. The weather is very weird here. Did a crop and enlargement of another video clip of the sun in white light that I sneaked during a very brief break in the clouds the other day. Surprised how much detail my new planetary camera delivered whilst using my 66mm Altair Astro ED scope a a telephoto lens. QHY make fine value for money cameras!

I feel very lucky to have had near uninterrupted clear skies in Plymouth for the last two weeks! It has now sadly come to an end but after the horrible weather this winter and spring I am very happy to have had it!

Hopefully you get your turn with the hole in the clouds soon!

  3. I've just calculated how much money I've ACTUALLY spent on astro this year. And now I am glad my family doesn't know because they might stage an intervention...

Unfortunately the bank account balance (and lack thereof) makes itself all too well known haha

  4. Just finished the surgery on my Nikon D3200! No more pesky IR filter removing all my Ha! Can't wait for the next clear sky! It all seems to work fine and the images around the house are quite orange haha. Anything I need to be aware of when it comes to IR-modded DSLRs? I didn't have a replacement filter to put in so I'm a bit worried about dust and if it will now accept TOO much IR?

Indeed mine was a massive success!

Hope you get similar uplift in results! I think you can tell which one was taken with vs without haha876010149_ORIONNEBULA-1.thumb.jpg.012d3cf22802367d62226420b3a6c50f.jpg

  5. Well, since i'm new here.

I'm still having problems with aligning my mount....

I have a Bresser MON2 with a Synscan set from Skywatcher.

It's operational, but aligning is still a big thing for me...

    1. pipnina

      pipnina

Don't worry, it get easier with practice.

Polar alignment is a huge deal, but easy to get it "close enough" with a little practice. The SynScan handset tells you what clock angle polaris should be in the polar scope remember, so you can use that to get a good idea of where to put it!

  6. Two nights in a row out under the stars. No cloud at all tonight so excellent! Managed to see Comet 2019 Y4 (ATLAS) through my big bins and now hopefully imaging it with my widefield mini- rig. Self isolating in a big way as the rest of  Lowestoft's residents appear to be asleep in bed. Don't remember ever seeing Coma Berenices quite so bright with the naked eye and spectacular through my bins. What a great night for stargazers.

I have to agree! A wonderful set of nights perfectly coinciding with me being home from work.

Hope to get some good use from my kit. Pleiades was clear as anything when I was outside just now. A lot of the cluster of stars surrounding Aldeberan were visible too despite the light pollution being heavier in that direction.

Yeah. It seems to be whenever I have time to get the kit out, the sky has something to say about it.

      pipnina

I have lovely, cloudless weather here... The forecast says that goes bye-bye at 23:00 and comes back at 03:00 though ?

  11. I think the ZWO 1600MM is the first CMOS I've seen with a reasonable sensor size under £1k... Does it live up to the hype I've been hearing about it on here?

    1. pipnina

      pipnina

That is definitely proof of a good camera!

  14. With all this Sun the last few days I'm having to try really hard not to press the trigger on a new  ZWO ASI 178MM for solar imaging

Well if you have gotten new kit I think you've already let the clouds out on me.

I've also been tempted by the prospect of new kit, in part due to the weather. I have to remember that it will only get used about 10 times this year if I do buy it...

The clouds look to taunt me for at least a few days now according to the forecast. Maybe if I'm lucky I will get something on saturday...

  19. Just captured an extra hour of data for my orion image. With any luck that means 1/3 the noise floor in the final picture. Fingers crossed!

I've posted the version without the extra data. I might post the updated version at some point but I'm still not happy with it.

Seemed to improve things a fair bit, but still really noisy. Dunno if it's worth collecting another 3h to get the same reduction again...

It was 1c last night and I was cold enough. You must have been covered in a lot of thermals to stand staying in that weather!

Thanks for the link, we've managed to remove the ballhead from my dad's tripod and it's made the Star Adventurer much more stable!

  23. Got my Star Adventurer today, only problem so far is I don't think I have a tripod sturdy enough to carry it! My dad's is close but still leaves the Adventurer wobbling on the tripod's ball mount. We'll have to wait for some clear skies and see if it affects the images!

    1. pipnina

I'll have to see if this can be done, cheers!

  24. Finally got to see M78!

A bit fainter than I thought, but still impressive. I'm not surprised I missed it the other times I went looking.

      pipnina

I did look at the Pleiades that night, the cluster is very bright but I have never seen any nebulosity. Unless I have, but didn't see it due to the brightness of the stars.

  25. I must quit smoking... :x

    1. pipnina

      pipnina

I'm told you have to be careful with e-cigs, though. My sister's friend used them to quit real smokes but realized that they actually made her unaware of how much nicotine she was taking. (She didn't smoke that much, but every time she got the e-cig out she would take 30 cigs of nicotine without realizing).

Any step towards 0 smoke is a good one, however. Good luck!
