Elp; if you don't understand, why respond? I already stated in my post that there are no suitable Peli or Explorer cases to fit these scopes, hence my asking for others' experiences. I damaged one pricy bit of gear after a mishap with a soft bag, and have no wish to repeat the experience!

Most unfortunately I live in Lisburn, a suburban district of Belfast, in a orner house directly lit up by 12 streetlights; so any observing I do involves some travel to darker sites. Hence the need for safe transport protection....

Hi all, I recently bought a very nice Tak FC-100DZ refractor, and wanting to keep it that way, have been looking for sturdy storage options. However as any of u who have one of the Tak family of FC-100 scopes will know, they are awkwardly shaped when trying to find a suitably-sized case, being quite long and thin. I couldn't find any of the cases from my usual ports of call, Peli Protector and Storm, and Explorer cases, which weren't wastefully too big in one direction or other. I would be grateful to anyone who has already carried out the same search and has any suggestions. Until then, the original Tak original, and admittedly quite good, triple cardboard carton packaging will do. Thank you, Astrodan

Thanks dweller, Mike, think I've got an answer: there's an fm60 for sale on the Astromart site, with a very helpful description fron the seller. It is described as an aid in achieving very sharp focus for film cameras attached to telescope focusers. So not really used any more...

That's what I thought, thank you. Did you put the ocs at the scope end of the nosepiece, or between the nosepiece and the binoviewer, and if you tried both, did it make much difference? Thanks again

Yes, I'd read the can labels, and am aware of the geometry, but firstly, I was gong to follow Astrobaby's recommendation of 3 coats of Rustoleum white on the main tube and finder, and 5 coats of the Hammerite black on the mount (and possibly the 3 legs, although she didn't specifically mention those (yet?)), and secondly the manufacturer's estimates, assuming they haven't been exaggerated, would probably not allow for the following. A relatively small curved object like a tube is going to have continuous overspray compared to a flat surface like a car door, and a small complex shape such as the mount is going to have huge overspray, as are the open truss legs, perhaps 50% wastage. That's why I'd value someone else's experience. Davey-T - that's interesting to hear, although I thought the mount didn't look you could roll it. I'll try a small roller on the first coat. PS my border collie lady is chuffing at me as I type -walkies! DaveL59 - Powder coating would be very nice and hardwearing, but yes, probably pricey, and I agree, doing it yourself is the best. I recently unearthed my first scope, a Tal-1 (serial no. 0011, almost a prototype!) which I couldn't bear to part with despite ending up now with a lovely Tak 130. After sitting for years in my damp garage, it's in need of much tlc. Inspired by Astrobaby's excellent step-by-step guide like many others it seems, I've just started to follow her lead and do a complete overhaul. The most obvious thing I have to attend to is the paint, with Hammerite Satin Black Spray and Rustoleum Appliance Spray, which are relatively expensive items. I don't want to waste any, but also don't want to be caught short between coats, so if anyone else has done the same overhaul, I'd be grateful for an idea of the number of (400ml) tins to get.
