  2. haha yeah. I think having that chat made me step back and review what it was thats actually stopping me getting out (excluding the weather). I guess I just needed a chat 😉
  3. Looks great. I really need a lighter weight rig....though what to go for...? I could go back to an AVX as well, but so many more options (and prices) out there at the moment. Should be able to pick up a second hand one I guess quite reasonable now.
  4. The weather is awful...and now heading back to work from the 17th. Lets try and get out at least once a month I say. I wanted to continue on the lunar and planetary, as well as try the guiding etc. Might need a new lighter mount. What's is the playing field now in terms of small mounts with good guiding. AVX or CGX or Ioptron?

  7. Hi Andy. Quick question for you about the TAL 100RS focuser. I had one of the TALs start to play up, and having taken the focuser apart found one of the 4 small bearings has come apart. I have ordered some new ones (after I found the link on an old thread), but is there any other modifications / refurb I can do whilst its apart? It had started to slip a little, so did hear comments referring to roughing up the draw tube surface to aid grip? Thought I would ask an expert having drawn a blank searching on line. Hope all is well!

      I had some issues with my Tal 100RS focuser drawtube where it wasn't running true whilst racking in and out.

      Turns out there was a discrepancy on the flat of the draw tube,  one end measured 54.60mm, the other end was 55.04mm, that was enough for the focuser to slip when fully racked out.

      I flattened it out with a carborundum stone and removed the discrepancy and improved the grip (took some time though and constant checks with a  vernier gauge!!)

      Got all the above info off SGL member Moriniboy who had the same problem, he sent me some really good photos as well, I would contact him.

      PS No probs with the Tal focuser since.

      Thanks Gents. one last question. Where do the shims go? Two came out when the draw tube was removed, but cannot see an obvious place for them to reside. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

      Shims? Mmm. Only thing I can think of is that they came from beneath the curved metal piece that holds the bearings.

    An image of the mighty Clavius. One of the larger craters at 225KM in diameter. A very impressive walled plain that contains an arc of addition craters diminishing is size from 55KM (Rutherford) down to 12KM (Clavius J). Moretus is further towards the pole, and is around 114KM. It has a great central peak rising to 2700m) and numerous terraces. The tops of other craters can be seen towards the horizon, and the south lunar pole. Captured with a ZWO174mm (using a 642IRBP filter), on a Celeron Edge1100HD and CGEMDX mount. Image capture was via OACapture, stacked in Autostakkert2, Sharpened in Registax, finished in photoshop.

    Tycho Rays

    A shot of Tycho and an exaggerated partial view of the ray system that surrounds this young formation (you can see the lines of ejecta material which form the rays moving away radially from the crater). This image was captured on the 28th December at 19:12:57 and comprised of a single capture of 2063 frames, of which only 236 were used in the stack. It was captured using a ZWO174mm camera (with a 642IRBP filter), and a televue x2 barlow). This was mounted on a Celestron Edge1100HD, in turn held on a Celestron CGEMDX mount. It was captured using OAcapture, stacked in Autostakkert2, Sharpened in Registax6 and finished in Photoshop.

    One of a few shots of Tycho that were ok. One of the newest formations on the surface (in terms of millions of years), it is one of the brighter objects to image. at 52KM its not the largest of course, but it has made quite an impact on our local neighbour. The crater is starting point of the largest ray system on the surface, and is easily seen in binoculars. This image was captured on the 28th December at 18:31:56 and comprised of a single capture of 3080 frames, of which only 285 were used in the stack. It was captured using a ZWO174mm camera (with a 642IRBP filter), and a televise x2 barlow). This was mounted on a Celestron Edge1100HD, in turn held on a Celestron CGEMDX mount.
  11. Only just seen this! I was going to go and get some for the Edge1100.....how did you get on installing them? look awesome! I have the front mounted college...though was going to add these as well.

    Well out of the captures I took on Tuesday night, only 1 or 2 are worth progressing. This one is of the interesting area around Janssen. North is to the left hand side of the image. This includes the second largest reticlinear feature (Vallis Rheita) at around 303 miles long, and 18 miles at its widest. This is just starting to fall into darkness. Janssen the main crater in view is around 115miles in diameter. it contains its own Rimae (named after the crater) which can be seen in this image. One of the craters that has crushed part of Janssen is Fabricius (off centre) and is around 47 miles in diameter, and 7600 feet in depth. This has the two parallel central mountain chains, which I think has some nice details on in this capture. Equipment: Celestron Edge1100HD mounted on a CGEMDX, using a ZWO174mm with a 642 BP IR filter. The AVI was 2467 frames, of which 233 were stacked. Captured using OAcapture, stacked in As2, sharpened in RS6, finished in PS5. Thanks for looking

    Not been out with the moon in a while, and picked up a new devices to mess around with...so this is first light of the 174mm. Been saving for one of these for quite a while. Specifically purchased for Lunar / Planetary (and solar with correct filtering), and paired with my setup for the optimum resolving power. Seeing was average, though deteriorated by midnight. I only have a couple of shots out of the 100GB of data collected that are of any use. I must have hit a three minute odd window of calmness to get this. Feels like I have gone back to the beginning again when I first picked up a ZWO camera. The controls in the capture software were slightly different...so will need to practice. This is 304 frames from 3067, running at around 64 frames per second. This 47 second AVI created a file 7.22GB in size (so the need for large and fast hard drives becomes clear!) So here it is....quite a lot in this one. The main features are the three craters of Ptolmemaeus (93 miles), Alphonsus (71 miles) & Arzachel (59 miles). Good views of Arzachel's terraced and tormented walls. The volcanic past of Alphonsus shows nicely with the three darker 'spots' around the vents easily visible against the monotone surrounding lava. Bottom right has the famous 'Straight wall' fault feature (60 odd miles long and up to a kilometre n height). The dome like central peak of Alpetragius also is well resolved. Captured in oaCapture, stacked in Autostakkert2, processed in Registax6 and finished in Photoshop. Equipment: Celestron Edge1100HD, CGEMDX mount, ZWO ASI174mm camera, x2 barlow. Thanks for looking!
