  2. Thanks for the comments all. Settings were: Canon 1100D. Tokina 11-16mm @ f/2.8 ISO 3200. Exposures around 15 seconds. All processed in Adobe Lightroom. A program I'm coming to love more and more.
  3. Hey all, First real shot at the Milky Way while camping this week. I live in Birmingham so don't tremendous views without much travelling. Lot to learn in processing and maintaining subtlety. I think I've overdone it here and there but have only had a few hours of trying today. Better results in the pipeline hopefully. I'm a little disappointed I didn't take any shots at a higher exposure. i stayed close to 15 as I was worried about getting eggy stars, but should have gone for another ten or so I reckon. Never mind. Thought I'd share all the same.
  4. Thanks so, so much for all of your help and advice everyone. Set up again on another beautiful evening last night and had another go. Huge improvements with an increase in gain. Still lots and lots of room for improvement. Limiting factors here were no bhatinov mask so "chasing seeing" when it came to focus. Also using a Skywatcher 2 x barlow which isn't the best piece of kit in the world. I would imagine a televue 2.5x and a Bhatinov mask to make a pretty vast difference when I get my hands on them. My processing in this area still also leaves a lot to be desired to I'm hopeful I can get a lot better than this, but I'm very happy so far. I've waited to get a good planetary image for a really long time so thanks everyone who helped me with this so much. Very much appreciated.
  5. Thanks a lot for the advice. WIll have to wait for a clear gap in the weather and try again with some higher gain settings. if I remember rightly my gain was right around 0 so that will certainly be it. It's hard to know what you want Jupiter should look like in sharocap before you start your capture. Does anyone happen to have a picture Jupiter in their .avi before stacking? I had thought perhaps it was just my focus which through a 2 x SW barlow obviously looks horrible. it's hard to know when you have the best focus you can get. Does anyone have any advice in this regard?
  6. Evening everyone, Registax is giving me fits trying to bring out any detail in the final wavelet processing and I'm wondering if anyone can provide any advice please? I have followed this guide but when getting to the wavelet stage, I am unable to bring out any detail at all. The only change I seem to get is concentric circles appearing from the outside running in. An image is below: I'm wondering if my data is just terrible or I'm doing something wrong. I ran 1800 frames at the best focus I could manage, with an spc900 through a skywatcher 2 x barlow on a c9.25. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas at all? I've spent the last couple of hours googling to no avail and would love some help please.
  7. Hey all, Was taking some family photos off my camera yesterday and thought this worth a share. I was on my way back from an early morning walk to the shop and saw Venus close to the crescent moon, so I ran in and grabbed my camera, put on my 70-300mm and took a shot. When I was looking at it yesterday and zoomed in I could see a terminator on Venus in the same shape as the crescent moon so thought I'd crop it and share. I thought it was really interesting. Hope you enjoy.
  8. Yeah I'd like to echo that. My brother, my wife and I came down and setup our c9.25. There were people looking through it all evening and it was really great to see people who had never looked through a decent telescope see the moon and Jupiter for the first time. It was especially cool to see parents getting their kids out on a school night wrapped up in blankets to experience it. Thanks very much to the arrangers. It would have been nice to chat more with some other fellow astronomers but we were fairly inundated with new viewers - next time hopefully

  10. I got into astronomy November 2012 and as most people do, bought a skywatcher 200p dob after good advise found here on the SGL. My brother fell in love with astronomy because of the views that scope gave us of Jupiter and M42. It wasn't long until we wanted to begin imaging and so saved for an NEQ6 pro, but sold the dob to part fund an ED80 to image with. The sale of the 200p left us with the Evostar ED80 which is a tremendous scope for imaging, and whilst the detail to be found on Jupiter and Saturn was very impressive indeed, the aperture and focal length we experienced through the dob definitely left a hole. With Jupiter back in the sky and Orion getting to where we want it, we decided to jointly purchase something new and had decided on a C11 or C9.25. I love showing friends and family views through my telescope and felt either of those scopes would provide a bit of a 'wow moment' when viewing a planet through it, but also allow us to image and observe the fainter stuff up there when we obtain a reducer. With the dodgy seeing we get here, we decided on a c9.25 and managed to secure a 6 month old one for £750 through the SGL by a nice guy who delivered it to us and helped us to set it up and test it. I waited for Jupiter to appear over the houses on the estate I lived in and had a peek through a 25mm (stock skywatcher one free with an ST80) and with it not being at a good temperature, light pollution and cloud didn't get much of a nice view at all. Tonight has been beautiful though so we headed out to our usual dark site and got setup. The wind was really strong and with the dew shield on the c9.25 it was shaking all over the place the majority of the time. We had to be really patient in waiting for the wind to settle for us to get a decent view of whatever we were looking at. We gave the scope around an hour to get to the right temperature before we judged it at all, but I can't tell you how impressed we were in those moments the seeing and the wind came together and left us alone to appreciate the view. I'm lacking in EP's in the right spots for this scope and could only move between 25mm, 17mm and 10mm. 25mm showed lots of contrast and detail on the jovian atmosphere and framed the moons nicely. It was a really detailed, wonderful view, but we found that the 17mm really found the best mark when conditions were right. Lots of detail could be found on Jupiter and we were pretty blown away. I really can't emphasise this next point enough; M42 through this telescope is absolutely incredible. The level of detail to be found in the 17mm lens was astonishing. The trapezium was pin sharp and the nebula sprawled across the FoV in the EP, framed perfectly. We went back to it between any other targets we went hunting for, every time amazed. We're both pretty thrilled with our new toy and feel content we wont be needing to make another observing purchase for a very long time indeed. The only downside to owning this scope is the inevitable wallet pillaging that will end up concurring now as I obtain more equipment. 25mm is nowhere near wide enough for this telescope so I will need to read some reviews to find out some nice wider mm lenses to suit it. I also feel there is more detail to be found in good conditions in a lens somewhere between 17mm and 10mm. Other purchases are likely to include a reducer and a high quality barlow. I am very excited to get into planetary imaging again with the c9.25 and have had a modded CPC900 sitting on my desk ready for some time. Love this telescope. Had to come online and pass on (yet another) recommendation for this fine piece of kit.
  11. Can I ask a bit of an odd question? When you image Andromeda and do an exposure, is it clearly visible when you view the image on your camera screen or is it something that only really comes out when you process the image?
  12. Thanks again. In the end we decided not to proceed with it. Initially we felt is was just too much weight and imaging is ultimately where he wants to be. That combined with the age closed the deal for us. If anyone is interested the guy was going to sell for £575 in the end though. He may go lower potentially as he has had a lot of enquiries from people wanting to buy separately and wants to sell altogether. It's listed on astrobuysell - 250px on HEQ5 based in Carlisle I believe.
  13. Thanks a lot for the advice guys. Would the age of the mount and scope be of any concern to anyone? I'm unsure of older HEQ5 models and of the synscan is operating on an older firmware which is less desirable or anything. Just making sure all angles are considered before we proceed.
  14. Just to add a further bit of info, the whole lot is mint condition, bought in 2004 and going for about 600. I I'm unsure of any potential downsides to the scope as I'm unfamiliar with a model that old. Would love any advise from the more knowledgeable on here.
  15. Asking this for my brother actually. He's got his eye on this rig but we are wondering about the heq5's ability to image with this scope on board. It looks like a big tube on that mount. Anyone running similar and have some advice? It would be very welcome.
  16. I went out with my brother and sister, set up the imaging gear and had a stab at Andromeda (went badly sadly I think because of LP). Left the kit running for 90 minutes and sat watching the sky. We probably saw between 20 and 30 with one or two that were the most spectacular I'd ever seen. The sky was beautiful last night.

  18. Considering having a go at this tonight. Has anyone attempted one long exposure with an 1100d with the stock 18_55 lens? I'm unsure if it's fast and wide enough to be of any use for it so thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance.
  19. Hi there Will, You'll certainly find more joy using an ST80 I would imagine, although with the Synguider I have managed to get the system locked onto fairly faint stars now. I had a real pain getting my head around it too so am happy to share a bit of advice in case it helps. I'm unsure if you could get it to work appropriately with just a finderscope could you as it doesn't focus? - I could be way wrong and fcusing finderscopes could exist, but I'm a bit of a newbie and may not have heard of them. In any case, if you're using a small frac to guide here's what I do: Find a bright star like Vega, which you know the synguider will easily detect. Follow the instructions in the manual to the letter at this stage balancing noise and exposure to get an appropriate BRI level. Be sure to zoom right in on the star with the synguider to make the start as big as possible on the display and focus the scope to get the star as small as possible. At this stage LOCK the focuser and don't adjust again. Take out the synguider and put in a 10mm lens with the par-focal ring around it. Once again get the star as small as possible and lock the ring around the lens. Once this is done I know I have the focuser exactly where it needs to be to make stars as easily "seeable" as possible for the synguider. I then GOTO my imaging target and get it centred in the camera. Once this is done I look through the 10mm parfocal lens and find a decent star. I use ADM guidescope rings to give me good flexibilitry when finding a decent star. I get it locked in the centre of the 10mm and put the guider back in. I then adjust the exposure to get a good brightness level and tweak the noise settings to find a good brightness level. Anything less than 15 I tend not to settle for. Once this is done (and this is another key part) I centre the star on the middle of the cross. I then move the mount and ensure the star moves perfectly in line with the crosshair. If it doesn't, I rotate the guider slightly to make sure it moves along with crosshair both up and down. Once this is done I just lock it automatically, it grabs the star and then I set it to auto guiding and I'm sorted. I hope that helps. I'm working at the moment so it's a bit "rambly", but I know how frustrating a piece of kit it can be until you get it sorted so though whatever I could do to help may be worthwhile. Good luck.
  20. Matt, as it happens I took a photo that very night. The setup looks like this: I'm using an ST80 as the guide scope and the ED80 has a FR/FF attached. I do love my ED80. I wish I had something better for observing and may pick up a reflector at some point soon for that purpose, but for imaging I love it.
  21. Yeah all done with the ED80. When I cleared away the noise I was surprised at the detail captured actually. I live in a really well lit area so that Cls filter is a must. I may add more data to it next time I head out. Thanks again for the comments guys.
