  1. Well it finally arrived and is set up. I have to collimate it properly but as is I got to view the moon, saw some sattelites and viewed some constellations. Thanks to all for your advice especially Dan I am so gobsmacked at the absolute clarity and viewing even though notproperly set. This scope has blown away even my expectations I am viewing stars I can;t even see with my naked eye or through the finder scope. I heartily recommend the Dobsonian XT 8 Starwatcher to any newcomers to astronomy. Woohoo !!!! Clear skys Guys and thanks again for your help and advice.
  2. Hope this work here's my mugshot
  3. Hi Aronnax, I an new here but I was given some great advice from Dan. My Question was basically same as yours with same basic criteria: Here is Dans recommendation:
  4. Well I'll be Blowed . ( Aussie slang means Gobsmacked ) Thankyou to all and Admin for such a warm welcome. I shared with my wife about SGL and showed her the posts and she was so wrapped for me.Once again thanks for the warm welcome everyone it is much appreciated. Kind Regards and Clear Skys ( Hehe learnin the lingo ) to all Jeriah
  5. Strewth in all my excitement I forgot to say Hello to everyone. My name is Jeriah and I am 50 and getting my first Telescope. My beaut wife rallied my family to buy this as a present for me. She has observed me watching the stars just by eye for hours on end for years and wanted to bless me. Anyway I stumbled across SGL after doing 3 months research for a scope, and thought why not join and get best advice from experienced astonomers. Also the fact that after reading quite a few posts I have already learnt heaps of new stuff. A big thankyou to all those who replied to my original joining topic on what T/scope to buy. And thanks also for making me feel welcomed and not making me feel dumb as I am new to astronomy (unlike some other sites). Anyhoo I look forward to being part of a good community and picking your brains. Also sharing my experiences with you as I get more accomplished as an newbie astronomer. Clear skys to all. Kind Regards Jeriah
  6. Being a newbie as of today I just want to say a Huge Thankyou for everyone who responded and advice and links given, Unfortunately I have about a weeks wait for my first Telescope . However I am trolling through posts and picking up awesome tips and learning new things. I am am so grateful to this site and members for the welcome and not being made to feel put down and dumb because I am new to astronomy. Thankyou for having me and allowing me to have a fantastic first time experience. Kind Regards and Clear Skys ! Jeriah
  7. Thankyou Pibbles and Brown Dwarf. For my very first telescope I have purchased a Dobsonian 8" Bintel BT202 and also - Bintel 32mm Plossl (1.25") - Bintel 20mm Plossl (1.25") - Bintel 15mm Plossl (1.25") - Bintel 12mm Plossl (1.25") with colour filters( Comes with Lenses ). I do have a couple of questions though. The limited magnitude on this scope is14.0 , Is it possible to attach / or take photographs using 35mm Fuji Finepix S2950 digital camera through viewing eyescope ? If so also can time lapse video be done as camera also has video capabilities ? I realise that in order to follow ie (Moon) i would have to manually move scope, but I wish to video a moving night sky from 1 point. . Oh here also is ome links for Australians to purchase Dosonian Telescopes on sale until December. If links are disallowed my apologies I am just trying to give a good database for people in Australia. Please edit if breaches guidelines.Thankyou. http://www.bintel.com.au/Telescopes/Dobsonian/33/catmenu.aspx http://www.sirius-optics.com.au/index11.htm http://www.quasarastronomy.com.au/shops.htm
  8. Thanks Dan, I appreciate your taking the time out and advice. I will just get the Orion Dobsinian Skyquest XT8 and a Bintel Plossi eyepiece kit with filters. I have found a few places in Australia that sells both and are on special. So if there are any Australians who are looking to buy these here's a few links I have saved as too save you legwork and headaches. Just drop a note to me for links.
  9. Hello I live in Perth Australia and have gained an interest in astronomy. I know most of our night sky visually ( Naked eye ) as I don't as yet have a telescope. I wish to look at the moons surface and if possible at craters in very close up detail also to look at faint Nebullai and the planets and see their moons and colours. I Have been researching online for about 3 months different brands, lenses, reviews and so forth. So far about 80% recommend buying either a Orion Dobsinian Skyquest XT8 or Orion Dobsinian XT8 Intelliscope. Does anyone have either of these Telescopes or can someone recommend a telescope that would meet my above criteria. And also where to buy here ie Astromy shop visa vie department store. I have $600 as a budget that is also to buy a 5 pice lense kit with filters. Also bear in mind I do not wish to view the sun. Thanking you in Advance Kind Regards Jeriah
