  1. Hello Chris, there is no problem with tube flexure, I use an OAG for imaging making things way easier. Provided the telescope is well balanced you can approach payload limit. When I used a guidescope I was over the payload limit again with no problems. EQ8 is generous with twice the payload limit - a much sturdier mount altogether. Regards, John.
  2. Thanks for the comments. My big white monster on the EQ6 rests very nicely and guides well. Here in Brisbane dew is a problem so I have a big DIY blue dew shield. I must be near the maximum payload. Regards, John.
  3. SPX350 F4.53, ST10XME, Astrodon filters. Some bright interesting galaxies in Sagittarius, Fornax down to Canis Major. NGC1097 has 2 jet emanating from the bottom and bottom right of the galaxy. Barnard's Galaxy 6822 is 1.6 mil lyrs away full of HII regions. NGC2207/IC2163 are 2 interacting galaxies 110 mil lyrs away with 2207 stripping of material from ic2163. There have been 4 supernova since 1975. Regards, John.
  4. SPX350 F4.53, ST10XME, Astrodon filters. I have not imaged for a while but here are some Southern galaxies from Brisbane. N Hemisphere has bigger galaxies but the South has many medium sized galaxies. NGC247 mag9.1, 11 mil lyrs NGC300 is the Souths equivalent of M33 at mag 8.1 6 mil lyrs away with large HII regions. NGC1398 is a flocculent galaxy where its spiral arms merge together. Mag9.7, 80mil lyrs away. NGC1512 is interacting with another galaxy so has a spindly arm stretching out. Mag10.3, 38 mil lyrs away. Regards, John
  5. SPX350 F41.3, PGRFlea3, Baader RGB filters. MARS PROJECTION I managed to get all the way round Mars during May at its closest so I put together a Projection using WJupos, Analysis- Map computation and layered all of them together to get the full 360 degrees in Photoshop.   6. That's looking amazing, banding really easy to see. Specialist filters seem helpful with Uranus. John.
  7. Those Neptune images look very interesting especially the W25 image. You need such good seeing for Uranus and Neptune but detail is possible these days if you persist. Uranus is getting higher for Northern observers too. When I started astronomy in 1986 Pluto, Uranus and Neptune where all in the same place - Sagittarius area, all but impossible then. John.
  8. SPX350,PGRFlea3, Baader RGB filters. Mars F41.3 Saturn F34.5. Seeing was vgood on 19th with the image just vibrating on screen a lot of the time and this was repeated on 21st which was almost as good. Seeing between 8-9. After finishing with Mars I moved to Saturn and it looked mighty fine. After processing even the blue showed a hint of Encke div. Saturn on 21st showed detail with usual Dark Spot in North and light spots near equatorial region. Pity seeing like this came at the end of planetary season but it is appreciated. Regards, John.
  9. Those are impressive Neil for very low altitude. To get any albedo on Mars with edges and banding on Saturn. Surely now begging for an ADC to accompany? John.
  10. Hello everyone ,apparently this Saturn dark spot has been around since 2014 (N63.6 latitude) - I have not been paying much attention to Saturn for few years. My Mars projection looks way better than 2014 effort with plenty more detail so 2018 will be great for Southern observers. John.

  12. Thanks for the comments, I am told observing using an UHC (Ha OIII broad pass bands) filter makes the pair look like cosmic traffic lights as the red primary and the green/blue secondary contrast better as brightness difference is reduced and seeing is improved slightly. John.
  13. SPX350, PGRFlea3, Baader RGB filters. Mars F41.3 Saturn F34.5. Seeing was predicted to be good but I found it variable and on 3rd waves of terrible seeing took over bending Saturn and making it all but disappear through turbulent defocusing. Seeing managed to settle to near good for half an hour for Saturn where a dark spot was seen near the North pole shown in the GIF. Mars phase is increasing and albedo is not as contrasty, I have had a good trawl this season so I should be able to make a projection of the whole of Mars now. Regards, John.
  14. SPX350 F41.3, PGRFlea3, Baader RGB filters. Imaged from Brisbane, Australia. This double is tricky at 2.72" separation, the 1st and 5th mag stars are not the only difference because colours of red/orange and blue make a pleasing contrast. This is my best image of the two as the colour of the companion is obvious as seeing was good. Orbital period 1200-2600 years and separation 503 AU. Regards, John.

Mars f41.3 Saturn f34.5 We had nearly 3 weeks of rainy weather here in Brisbane but I got a couple of clear nights with JetStream very strong but seeing was not that bad. Mars is getting a bit smaller with a strong phase developing. I may get the weekend 2/3 July to take possibly my final Mars 2016 images. I managed a GIF sequence of Mars as well as a quick Saturn but nothing special. My scope only just cools down before I start to image using the mirror fan, it takes about 90mins.
