  2. I think you guys are doing a great job with these web lectures, the varied content has been so interesting. It has now become (for me) a bit of a Sunday evening institution that I look forward to, but I do appreciate the effort needed from you to make it each week and if the frequency reduces then that's fine.   3. I always use the MDS ADM kit for guidescopes, finder, counterweight system and camera bracket and have never had an issue with any of it. Both Anthony (ADM) and FLO are quick to respond to any questions and make sure that you get the correct fitting parts. Andy

  5. As Dave has already said you do not need to calibrate if you haven't changed things from session to session. I think that you do however need to either enter manually or have Maxim to be able to read the mounts declination position (this is my setup) so it can automatically compensate for different tracking rates at different positions in the sky. You can also use the auto flip function to take into account the meridian flip. ATB, Andy
  6. No contest for me it's Maxim every time. I started using PHD and found that some nights it would run perfect straight from the off, other nights I couldn't get it to guide no matter how much tweaking I did, bottom line was I wasn't prepared to lose valuable imaging time fighting with guiding software. Maxim has run absolutely spot on and reliably from the day I started using it. I appreciate that PHD is free and Maxim is not cheap but Maxim does numerous other things in addition to those already mentioned in the thread which may help one justify the cost. ATB, Andy

I can understand the concensus that screwing the Lodestar onto the thread is probably the best solution but when I did this and the Lodestar was tight the CCD chip was never square on to the light path coming out of the support pillar hole from the prism. I've gone with the 1.25" adaptor which grips the lodestar as if it was an eyepiece and can now get all the CCD illuminated. Had no issues with actual Lodestar flexure. Andy

  12. A good informative thread. I have a further simple question - once both the imaging camera and guide camera have been adjusted and are both in focus can the optical train then be altered by say adding or removing a focal reducer then you just simply refocus the imaging camera and do not have to touch the guide camera ?   13. Many thanks to you guys. I'll have a go as you have suggested, however it's extremely time consuming and a right pain to have to repeatedly remove it all from the scope to access the screw that holds the clamp to the ring, shim it and replace it on the rail. The fallback of 3 point rings starts to look ever more suitable..... Andy
  14. A misunderstanding here on my part I thought you were inferring that the shims went between the rings and the OTA hence my concern with a CF tube, I see that is not now the case. Here is picture of the WO CRC rings on the ADM bar mounted on the SCT Homeyer cradle, I don't have one (yet) of the dual bar setup. Andy
  15. Thanks for the feedback, I was looking for pinpoint accuracy but maybe this is unrealistic ? I already use CCD calc to get some idea of object sizes on the CCD FOV for the camera's and scopes. I'm using ADM mounting bars and ADM MDS clamps attached to the rings. There seems little or no adjustment on any of the attachment screws as they are all tight. Given what Jesper says regarding no extra benefit it may be easier to dump the CNC rings and use a set of ADM 3 point rings as I've tried unsuccesfully shimming with card (don't fancy using metal shims as it may damage the CF).   16. Thanks Merlin, Ok for plate read bar and please allow for my (mis) use of the terminology. The 2 scopes will either be mounted side by side direct onto the GEM mount or perhaps piggybacked together on my SCT, either way how do you get them to align with each other when there is effectively no adjustment on the CNC rings ? I also could not to get good alignment using a single scope piggbacked using the ADM MDS system and WO CNC rings. ATB, Andy
  17. Hi all, A simple question but maybe not a simple answer........ I wish to put 2 scopes on a ADM dovetail plate both mounted using CNC rings (William Optics variety) - how do I manage to get good co-alignment between the 2 scopes ? The misalignment is probably a couple of degrees and I've tried simple things like shimming with bits of card but to no avail, maybe a case of ditching one of the scopes CNC set of rings and replacing it with a set of ADM 3 point tube rings ?   18. Well for completeness, my Earlsman inverter emits a high pitched hum that does not reduce at all with extended use. Andy
  19. Euan, Many thanks for the PSU info. I'll have a look around for one for my Earlsman panel - I wasn't aware that you could dim the panel using a lower voltage to the inverter without damaging it - I've been using white paper like most other folks! ATB, Andy

  22. Thanks Rob, Makes sense in that pre / post flip doesn't affect the optical train. Not sure I get the bit about rotating the lights pre stacking after applying flats - is this something DSS can do automatically or do you need to do the post and pre meridian shots separately in DSS, then rotate one of them and combine them both in DSS ?   23. Some excellent information here. Along a similar vein concerning lights, flats rotation etc. If some flats were say taken before a meridian flip and some after can they simply be converted to a master flat or do they need rotating first ? and also Can lights taken on one side of the meridian be used with flats from the other side of the meridian without the need for rotation ? Hi all, I look with great interest at the image above and see that some of the brighter stars in the center have small flare like defects coming from them whilst others next to them look nice and round. These flares all point in the same direction and are not radially away from the center. I have a similar issue where 1 or 2 of the stars in my images (usually the brighter ones) have these type of flare distortions. On each image they always point in the same direction (not radially away from the center) whilst all the rest of the stars are round and focused - note that I am not using a focal reducer of any sort and I'm imaging through a SCT at F8. Does anyone have a explanation as to what or how this type of distortion is being formed ? Many thanks, Andy
