  1. Alan, that is probably a good thing. I don't think your wife would be very pleased if you came home with yet another eyepiece .
  2. Now I've done it.... both cases now sorted out, a third one ordered, and a new eyepiece too. That makes 3 cases....

When I left Les Granges the weather forecast said clear skies for the next week... it may well be me.

  6. Optimizing my computer ready for the complex world of astrophotography. Next on the list is a larger HD and more RAM. Still running Mac OS, but if the software isn't going to play ball I'll just have to Bootcamp. Don't expect any images from me for a considerable time ;).

  7. In these past 3/4 days at Les Granges I've already had 11 hours observing, most with a 20" dob - stunning skies. Need I say more? :D

not jealous, really not :) Enjoy!

  8. In my experience, observing with small scopes in urban skies can be pleasing as long as you adjust your expectations. For example, my 66mm ED refractor is never going to show me M31 in it's full glory from my heavily light polluted skies, but it does show me M31. Small refractors are perfect for widefield - the occasional cluster (probably shown almost as a smudge) and brighter nebula. Looking southwards towards the horizon however is off with the 66mm for me - it's the direction of the city centre. The main advantage with these small refractors is that they are light and easy to set-up which is especially good if you're tired from work ;). My NELM is probably around 4.1, maybe 3.7 ish when looking southwards (where I do most of my observing!)
  9. Slowly coming to the realisation that I can't fit anymore telescopes into my room. Not if I want to be able to get around properly anyway ;).

Do you need a baby sitter for them whilst you are in France ?

    3. Naemeth

      Naemeth

It was only when I tidied my room that I could get around properly too...

No babysitter needed, wouldn't want any extra dust fibers being created...

I come with a certificate of sterility :-)

  10. You know... watching The Culture Show which was basically about Lego does make me think about starting a Lego collection again. I couldn't get enough of it as a child... had 3 large storage boxes full!

I got a lego 42009 for christmas, first lego set since I was a kid. It took many hours to build and was a lot of fun on rainy, cloud nights. ;)

  13. Why did my bank have to give me a contactless card? Do they not know how unsecure they are... not to worry though, I've lined some foil in my wallet which should block the radio signals :).

It's actually a pretty robust system, holes have been identified and new cards are already closed to that. Like all new tech and old, it will be vulnerable, chip and pin was, the magnetic strip was and still is if someone can double swipe. I have used one for well over a year without incident. Totally agree though, if you don't feel comfortable with it, remove it. Lower your surface area to attack, it's a common IT practise called defence in depth.

  14. That is what a budget is though, isn't it?
  15. Oops, at least it still comes under budget :). It should give you an idea of amount you need to save up for the next one too.
  16. It's here :D

  18. Wine has to be one of the greatest bits of software for Mac ever.. it allows you to run a kind of virtual windows machine on your mac, currently going back and playing games that used to only work on Windows 95!

    1. Naemeth

      Naemeth

Doesn't work with all games, just a few. But it's brilliant that it does :).

      Naemeth

Cheers, hopefully will be better tomorrow - don't want to lose all of my 3 days off by being ill.

  21. 22kg isn't at all bad. Much lighter than I thought it would be considering the C14 is 25kg. I initially ruled out anything above a 24" mirror due to weight - but apparently it doesn't need to be as heavy as I thought :D - I was thinking more like 40-50kg for a 30" mirror .
  22. Might have a think about it How much will the mirror weigh?!!?!
  23. Somehow I missed your reply. Well, one step isn't too bad - I was considering getting a 24" F/3 as my final scope. However, I'm not going to be doing the grinding ;).
  24. Really good job Rich, can't remember if I've asked before, but what focal length are you going for? Presumably less than 1.8m?
  25. Hmm, clear skies so may drag myself out, question is: Is my 24mm Pan overkill for the little ST80? :D

      Naemeth

Yeah, think I will. Think I might leave my ST80 inside though, I'll give the big dob a nice breath of fresh air tonight :).
