  1. Hi mate, I have just been looking at your comments for the skytravel 120mm and would like to no, if you did get the 2inch EP and the 2inch diagonal. I am about to purchase a new ST 120mm and could use all the advice I can muster.

if you desperately want high magnification, then a Mak would be a better choice

      But

they aren't as good on some DSO's because of their narrower and darker field of view.

      High Mag planets/moon = Get 127 Mak

Low to medium, star clusters DSO, nebula = ST120

This is basically what i use my two scopes for

Try the tool again, but with the 127mm Mak

Believe me, the view of the moon, even in an ST120 is far superior to any pair of binoculars i have ever looked through.

I think this may be of some use to you:-

      http://astronomy.tools/calculators/field_of_view/

You can select your scope, eyepiece combination and target.

It should then show you approximately what the view will be like of the selected target.

      Hope this helps

IMHO, i probably wouldn't bother with the barlow right away.

The 25mm eyepiece is not too bad, the 10mm is not too good lol.

As i said i have a Celestron 9mm and it is a good eyepiece. I think you will be more than pleased with the scope certainly for a first scope, if you find the views aren't good enough at high mag then get a 102mm or 127mm Mak to compliment the ST120. This is precisely what i have done.

I think a 6 or 7mm eyepiece is the Maximum i would go to in this scope, and i don't think i have ever barllowed my 6mm one. It is just too much for the scope. i usually try to keep at 100x or less. Sometimes with astronomy less mag is better for viewing certain objects. For instance M31 andromeda galaxy is better with less mag even in a better scope. lol

At the end of the day if you find you want something better then you would get sa good chunk of your money back by selling the scope on.

Don't overthink it, there is not one good scope for everything. But my ST102 has done me pretty well over the years.

With some solar film to make a filter they make a decent tool for observing the sun in white light too.

      Enjoy

the problem here is that some people like certain types of scope, and unless its a super duper apochromatic scope costing £500 + people will disrespect "lesser" scopes (their views, not mine).

As i say, i have had a ST102 for 5 years probably. i sold it to my dad, then bought it back.

I have used it on the end of my camera, hand held, like a bit lens to take pics of airliners flying over my house.

Check out my flickr page for some examples of astrophotography i did with the scope on an alt/at goto mount, which people said wasn't possible. It is, but the results aren't as good as mount costing £600

You get what you pay for. To be honest a ST102 would be a good scope for moon and terrestrial views and would be more portable too. My ST120 is quite a bit heavier and bigger than the 102 even though its only 18mm more aperture.

Where are you located by the way?

I have just got a 2" diagonal which i bought from someone on here. Still waiting for the eyepiece to arrive.

Then i just need some decent weather and clear nights.

Will let you know how it goes
