  1. I'm with Renters and Pig I'm afraid. I see no harm in this - it's a lovely gesture, if so brine bought me one I'd be chuffed
  2. Welcome to the SGL12 Bring and Buy thread. We have tried a few different different approaches to the Star Party Bring and Buy sale. We've tried set times and locations, and whilst it didn't not work... it didn't work that well either. So this year a new approach. We will still have a thread (this thread) on the forum where attendees can post up details of the items that they are taking to sell at the Star Party, these details should of course include the price. Our thinking is that by including the price it enables people that have their eyes on a new mount or camera, to take funds with them for the item that they fancy. So this year nice and easy... The transaction is nothing to do with SGL. We do not want to hear about any disputes - the deal is between the buyer and the seller. How and when you display goods for sale is up to you. At many star parties people have goods for sale on tables on their own pitches, or have mounts setup with a "For Sale" sign hanging around them. Whichever way suits you best. We would love for this to encourage people to walk round all the pitches see whats about, talk to people etc. Who knows who you'll meet, or which scopes you may get to look at/through that you never even knew were there. Just one word of caution. Please remember that the camp site is open to members of the public and also other campers that are not part of SGL - you need to take whatever precautions that you feel are right to protect your items. Once pitch numbers have been announced you can edit your post with your pitch number so that buyers can come find you. SO... What have you got to sell at SGL12?
  3. I think that there may be a glitch in the album software - post up your query in the Suggestion/bugs section and someone cleverer than me (or me if your unlucky) will help you out. Post a link to your images if possible when you post. cheers Ant

    Lovely shot
  5. Brilliant its certainly something that I wouldn't ever have thought of. Really saved the day for me
  6. Yeah, SGL had some issues with people editing posts and changing the content to just a single full stop. Which I'm sure you'll agree causes a few issues with the threads becoming unreadable. When you get to 50 posts you can edit posts, but only for a short period of time (think it might be half an hour...). Cheers Ant
  7. Total lunar eclipse. Viewable by Europe and the Americas. Starts in the small hours (UT).
  8. We have had issues in the past where members have edited their posts and replaced all the text with a full stop. This version of software doesn't allow us to see post edit history, so the compromise was to allow members to edit their won posts once they reach 250 posts. But even then it's limited in time. The member ranks is just a bit of fun and actually signifies nothing at all except the number of posts made. Cheers Ant

  11. I used VNC, which works particularly well with thee iPad and windows7. That's free and works over a LAN. Cheers Ant
  12. Yes that is often an issue with text based communication, I am surprised that being a mod of another large astro forum you haven't come across it before. You don't need to learn HTML. Just these two : ) put together without spaces give you Happy days Ant

Is there some way to make DSS produce 16bit TIFFs instead of 32bit tiffs 104mb ones, maybe it would go quicker ?

  19. Hi Jackstay, We do have section for at least some of the things you mention below. We have a section on star parties here - http://stargazerslounge.com/forum/45-star-parties/ We sort of have area for this - http://stargazerslounge.com/forum/165-observatories/ which includes some dark sky sites. Also the social groups section has groups in some areas, - http://stargazerslounge.com/forum/103-social-groups/ but we've not looking at setting up any fresh groups. Trouble with that is that everyone has specific requirements and advice that is good for one isn't good for another. It's easier and more specific for people to just post what their exact requirements are and we help them spend their money - it's almost as good as spending our own money Ant
  20. Thanks Shane. The collimation PDF is downloaded and currently sitting on the printer. If I can work out collimation it will be a modern day miracle Cheers Ant
  21. You'll get better and better at it the more you do it. I have a Celestron mount with goto and find the scrolling text very very difficult to read, the SW synscan handset is absolutely find to read. Odd that they look so similar :). I would never use Polaris as an alignment star, maybe that's just the years of using an EQ mount... Personally I would do a 2 star alignment using Aldebaran in Taurus and maybe Rigel for over observing in the west. Maybe Procyon and Regulus for the East and South. Sounds like your having fun with Jupiter thought :). Mars is the British red star rising in the South East around 11pm. Cheers Ant
  22. Getting up in the middle of the night is really hard (well for me anyway), Steve has the right idea, staying up is the better option :)

It's all good practice mate. I'm surprised how smoothly mine went. Even did it under a red head torch - practicing not upsetting the visual people.
