  1. Many thanks for all of the replies they are all very helpful and I’ll have a look at the other scope options mentioned. My setup is in a garden room at the bottom of my garden and I only need to move the current scope 8 metres from room onto the lawn outside the only difference in level is the door step. Transporting a dobsonian is likely to be minimal as additions of young child and dog means that realistically there is not normally space for any scope no matter the size, even in my van! I’ll certainly look into the explore scientific option if it is lighter as well as being a lot more compact. Thanks again!
  2. Hi all, I’ve been using an old charles frank 4” reflector since I started out when I was 9 almost 30 years ago (I put a post ago about it on SGL back in 2012). Since then I’ve modified it to take plossl eyepieces etc but the primary and secondary mirrors are both now very badly tarnished and I’ve decided to put the money I’d need to improve the scope in general and aluminise the mirrors into buying a new replacement instead. I’m seriously considering the Sky-Watcher 250 flextube dobsonian with goto as a sturdy mount with a 10” Ota as being the largest I’d consider based on space/practicality. I’m into observation and occasional AP is limited to planetary/lunar. The scope would be used primarily in my back garden but it may occasionally be transported in a car/campervan to remote sites. I live in a heavy light pollution area and so I do occasionally take my scope away with me to Northumberland/highlands etc. Although I’ve found the weight for the OTA I’m struggling to find one for the goto Mount. I was wondering what experiences people have of moving them and (other than detaching the OTA), whether it will comfortably fit in a medium hatchback. Alternatively is the 8inch goto version much lighter/easier to manoeuvre? Ultimately I want something that’s going to be reasonably practical to transport (with a bit of effort) and either option will no doubt be a huge improvement from what I’m currently trying to work with! Any thoughts would be very much appreciated! Many thanks!
