  1. While the SW 180 mak is a good planetary scope ypu might also consider the GS0 8” Classical Cassegrain.  Used to have the 180 mak but replaced it with the 8” CC. Find it has the edge over the 180 in on axis sharpness and resolution.and has a crayford focuser and fixed primary (no mirror flop). Great overall build quality and will take about 500x mag on the moon when seeing is good enough.

Classical Cassegarains used to be very expensive and hence you didn’t see many around but now that GSO has brought out an affordable version it is rapidly gaining in popularity.

I have both the 8” CC and the 6” CC which is a grab’n’go scope.

My 8” CC along with a 125 APO.

  2. Would be quite easy to fit a finder shoe with a flat bottom to the top of the saddle although I would get a bit of 1” x 4” ali angle and fit it between the saddle and mount to avoid drilling the saddle.

BTW I prefer my finder on the scope. 🙂

  3. I would recommend a Concentre for setting up the seconday properly. Will get your secondary perfectly centered and set up. Tried all the other methods and none was as accurate as the Concentre.

The Hotech is about the cheapest good laser collimator around. Used one after the Concentre and got great results.

Many will come along and recommend a Cheshire eyepiece but I’ve found it’s better than nothing but a poor substitute for the Concentre. No where near as accurate.

The Howie Glatter collimating gear is excellent but expensive.

  4. Set the alt and az clutches slightly loose and the alt lock completely loose for now. Found having the alt clutch in particular overtightened isn’t good for smooth movement. I can move the scope from low angle to vertical and it stays balanced. You don’t have to have the clutches fully tight to use the slo mo controls. You should be able to move the scope easily by hand as well as using the slo mo controls.

I suspect some of the other adjustments have been played with.

    The manual.
