  1. So, I am trying to get to where you are with the Saturn shot on your Stargazer acct.......what did you use for that impressive shot??

We do have some Dark-Sky parks here in the Eastern US......closest is Cherry Springs in North Central Pennsylvania:

    http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/cherrysprings/serious-stargazing/

Returned this week from South Central Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park, where there is zero light pollution (all raw desert, approx 80 miles from the closest light source).

Basically, am in need of something that can go in the overhead bin (I travel a lot) and not, Heaven forbid, as checked baggage in the hol dof the aircraft. Am considering a short-tube.....going to look at one today at the local scope shop!

    Thx,

    Marc

    Hi Marc,

I took the picture of Saturn with a Celestron SLT130 with an SPC900 webcam and a 2 x barlow. I captured the video with Sharpcap and then processed it with avistack. I hope that helps

    All the best

    Phil

  2. Looks like I might have a result, shielding outside my house again and possibly on the main problem light which effects my back garden. It pays to ask and to be fair they were pretty prompt the first time round.

    Hi Christine,
A while back you very kindly got a light shielded outside my house post number  4B901, unfortunately the black paint has now gone off of it and it is back shining in my bedroom window again. Could you pass this on to the relevant people as the North Tyneside lighting website is not working at the moment.
    Many Thanks
    Phil

    Hi Phil
    Thank you for your email.
I have checked our records and it was actually a shield that was fitted to column 4B901 on 08/09/11. It was possibly removed to allow the new remote monitoring system to be fitted and was not replaced. I have booked a job on this column to has the shield re-fitted for you.
The new system that has been fitted in ********** Avenue and other surrounding street actually operates on a dimmed basis. The lighting switches on at 75% then dims around midnight to 65%, then back up to 75% around 5.00am. The system also alerts us to any faults with an individual light.
I will look into the possibility of having a shield fitted to the column in ********* Road and if we can fit one, we will.
    Kind regards
    Christine
    Hi Christine,
Thank you so much, by the way I can assure you although the records might say a shield I watched the guy paint it!
    Many Thanks

  3. That's interesting as I frequently fly over Portugal on trips to Tenerife and have always been surprised at the apparent high level of ground based illumination.

So do I and its probably because flying from the UK we end up over Lisbon then Porto which is the worst effected part of Portugal for light pollution. Further south inland from the Algarve as Paul suggest are some very dark spots especially if you are shielded in a valley, when I travelled around Portugal some places were amazingly dark. If you can get away from the cities and into the mountains taking your life in your hands with the dodgy roads some great seeing can be had.

  4. Great.

I rather look forward the the regular Sky @ Night bashing / defending threads. I never remember when it is on, so these threads remind me to fire up the old iPlayer, kick back and enjoy.

Surely a thread or two building on some of the topics discussed on the show might be worthwhile?

    Paul

Same here Paul, going to watch it now.

  5.  If W10 is pants then there are problems as Win7 is obsolete and unsupported.

Windows 7 is still available to buy pre-installed on desktops (Lenovo and HP) from our supplier with the option of a Windows 8.1 licence (although getting harder to source) and extended support for Windows 7 i.e. Security Updates will be available until 2020 should you not want to dabble with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 when it appears as final release, which as suggested will probably be free for Windows 8.1 users. Have you tried pulling the memory out and then running it with the minimum of memory dimms in case one has gone duff?

  6. Its called a bung, lobbed in the right direction it can get you pretty much anything you want. I have to laugh when I am in Spain and the local Brits moan about corruption, I assure them its alive and well over here.
