  6. Hi brantuk from stoneybroke 15 Thanks for your advice, have purchased a Celestron C8 SGT XLT with EQ mount. Hope to join in with some star parties and observing sessions soon.
  7. Thanks to all who have welcomed me to SGL, also for the advice, I have decided that the EQ mount is the better option for me. Hope to "talk" to many members and see you at star parties. Robbo
  8. I am a member of Leicester astronomical society and keen to advance from naked eye viewing. Looking to buy a Celestron C8 SGT XLT with equitorial mount or Nexstar SE 8 with alt/azimuth, would like to image in the future and have been told an EQ mount is necessary as alt/azimuth won't track accurately. On the other hand the alt/azimuth is said to be far easier to set up and much lighter to transport. Any advice please, and info on star parties would be welcome.

    Which scope?

Am looking to buy either a Celestron Advanced C8 SSGT XLT on a CG 5 mount or Celestron Nexstar 8SE on the alt/azimuth mount. I will probably image at some time and have been told an equitorial mount is necessary for imaging as the alt/azimuth won't track accurately enough. The Nexstar looks easier to set up and is much lighter, but if it can't be used to image then the equitorial option seems the way to go. Can anybody advise please?
