  1. Details have now been released for the 15th annual "Starfest" starcamp organised by Scarborough & Ryedale Astronomical Society. The 3 day event takes place in Adderstone Field, Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire between Friday 5th and Sunday 7th August. Astronomers from across the UK attend this event to take advantage of the dark skies in the North York Moors National Park and the forest has recently been awarded "Milky Way class" of the Dark Sky Discovery status. Early arrival from Thursday 4th is also available. For those who have not attended Dalby previously, please note the facilities are basic! Its all about the quality of the skies. Guest speakers for the weekend will be announced in due course as they are confirmed. More information and a booking form can be downloaded from the Scarborough & Ryedale AS website (http://www.scarborough-ryedale-as.org.uk/saras/starfest/starfest-2016/). The society can also be found on Facebook and Twitter. To avoid confusion with other events using the name Starfest, we have opted for an offical hashtag for this years event of #DalbyStarfest16.
  2. Hi Sean. Just replied to your query through the SARAS website whilst catching up on some of our enquiries but also come across your query on here. So for everyone else..... In terms of what happens at these events, a number of society members will have telescopes available for members of the public to look through and to tell you more about what you are observing. They will also point out some of the major constellations and asterisms for you. Wrap up warm as it can get very cold and try and use red light to preserve your own and others night vision. If the night happens to be cloudy or wet, we have use of an indoor space in the Forestry Commission Visitor Centre where members can give a virtual tour or talk as an alternative. Hope this helps.
  3. Still a few pitches remaining....booking open until the end of July. Book soon if you are interested as it will be a first come, first served as we have a maximum number of pitches to adhere to.
  4. Hi Dom. The site is never left unoccupied over the weekend so it is completely safe leaving telescopes setup and your tents / equipment too. And your question about is it any good, I would certainly have to answer yes as an organiser. This year will be our 15th annual camp and many attendees return year upon year. Rocket competition, quiz, guest speakers and hog roast all add to a busy weekend and of course the clear skies (which I wish I could promise).
  5. Guest speaker details have now been confirmed....... Stuart Atkinson (Eddington AS) - "Our Place in the Universe"John Nichol (Nichol Optics)- "Telescope Disasters"Juergen Schmoll (Cleveland & Darlington AS) - Title TBCPitches still available but the site is filling up so recommend booking ASAP to avoid disappointment.

  7. Hi Rob. The skies are fantastic in and around the North York Moors National Park. Whitby AS hold regular meetings and feel free to check out SARAS as we hold monthly meetings plus observing sessions and we run the annual Dalby Starfest each year.
  8. Personally not used the lumicon one Ian but having used both the Baader and Skywatcher ones I must say the Baader one edged it for me in the society 16" Lightbridge on objects like the veil. Used it also in my 12" from the middle of town and gives good results.
  9. Hi John and Harry and welcome to SGL. The North York Moors is fantastic on an evening so glad you enjoyed a few nights near Whitby looking at the stars under the dark skies.
  10. Thanks everyone. The recent discussions I will pass on at our upcoming committee meeting that will mainly be to review Starfest ahead of starting planning #DalbyStarfest15. I like the idea suggested above by John about being asked at check in about what was expected. Overall though I think the feedback on here and social media has been very positive and as organisers I think we can be pleased with how the event is running and continues to grow in quality. Certainly helps when the weather is kind rather than washing out a weekend. See you all next year!
  11. Yes we do say in our mailings before the camp that red light and no green lasers apply for the camp. We were aware of the use of lasers by some during the thick fog that rolled in on Saturday night but as soon as the skies started clearing again, normal service was resumed so everyone could enjoy the dark skies. As Michael says the police probably caused more distraction when attempting to remove the unwanted visitors. This is something that happened for the first time in the 14 Starfests and we are raising with the Forestry Commission to ensure a repeat will not occur in future.
  12. Welcome to SGL from the Yorkshire coast!
  13. Welcome to SGL from the Yorkshire coast! Not sure what other groups are in your area but a number of members of the North Devon Astronomical Society make the annual long journey to our August Starfest in Dalby Forest.

    Hello

Welcome to SGL from the Yorkshire coast!
  16. As organisers we are very happy to see the masses of positive comments for the camp this year starting to come through on here and via Facebook and Twitter. Always pleasing to have the clear skies and to know that the activities we put together are well received. Neil and Andys impromptu game of Kubb on the Saturday evening (something new on probably 98% of people at Starfest) was certainly a first for us in Dalby but can see a repeat next year! Anyone unsure on the game Kubb, please see the British Kubb Players Association website I came across this morning (http://www.kubbuk.org/index.htm). As website admin for SARAS we will be putting together some galleries in the next few days. If anyone has any images of the weekend, the various activities and results from imaging, please do share with us. All images used on the website, as other years will all be credited to the source. These can be emailed to myself at saras.secretary@gmail.com . Next years sees the 15th annual Starfest that will also coincide with the 40th year of the society. So any ideas on something a little special will be happily received as we start planning. Hope to see you all returning for #DalbyStarfest15. Dates for your diaries is Friday 14th - Sunday 16th August. Once again Thursday arrival will be possible for a small additional fee. Booking will open us usual in early January. Those who have attended any of the past 3 Starfests will receive a booking form via email, assuming the email address you used to book for Starfest is still valid.
  17. Hi Jules. Easiest way is to enter Dalby Forest from the village of Thornton le Dale located on the A170 between Pickering and Scarborough. Dalby along with RAF Fylingdales are signposted on brown signs. As you enter the forest you will start to see yellow signage for Starfest. The signage continues along the forest drive for around 4 miles until you reach Adderstone Field on your left hand side.
  18. There will be plenty of people to ask when you get here Jules for advice. I would recommend seeking out Juergen and Keith as their results from Dalby are always top notch.
  19. Yes forecast at the moment looks OK in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings. Forecast has been improving through the week so hopefully some longer periods of clear skies will occur. Just got back from a day up there today and around half of the pitches are already occupied so hope those up there tonight get some good gaps between the showers forecast.

    'Ow do!

Hi Amy and welcome to SGL from the currently sunny Yorkshire coast.
  21. Hi Jules. Yes each pitch is 10m square so plenty of room for car also on the pitch. As attendees arrive they choose pitches so yes it will be a case of what is left available.
  22. Hi Michael. Paul has asked me the same question on Facebook. When the first SAS member arrives, if they let us know how many pitches you require and we can try and place you all in the same locality.
  23. We are now sold out! Anyone who has booked should have received an email confirmation and passes / tickets through the post.
  24. HI Wikiastro. Can confirm we have 7 pitches remaining along with a few tickets for the Friday hogroast.
