  1. Quite weird but the country that gave us access to space (Russia) has no-one on the map!
  2. nice one. how many stills was in that? I usually aim for bout 25 or 27 fps. Shall have a go at a night time one...if the clouds ever dissipate that is...infact I might have a go tonight if its clear.
  3. I think the answer to the question on your mind (excuse the Killers lyricalness there) can be found by visiting the University part of the iTunes Store. Open iTunes, go to the store, select iTunesU from the left menu and then go to Science and click on the double arrows to find the Astonomy pages. You will be presented with several university links, select the Cassiopeia project and from there choose number 15 'Universe'. Either double click to play or download. This video will explain about expansion, visibility and so on.

Try downloading GB Timelapse from a software developer site called Granite Bay, I use that to capture my images, it will detect the Canon (I have the same model) if you go to the tabs and click on connect in one of the drop down menu's. You can use the USB cable that came with the Canon. Make sure your Canon is in 'M' Manual mode, from there you can change all the settings in the program remotely, you can also do a preview to check exposure levels and brightness etc etc. You can program in a number of shots to take or start it off manually and stop it manually. Once you have the images then you can use Picasa to put them together...but don't ask me how cos I haven't used it yet, I was using another program which I have forgotten the name of and don't have anymore. Try and save the video so you can open it with Quicktime and not Windows Media Player.....I find that WMP hogs memory and freezes on playback.
  5. Hello, I had a NexStar 4SE for a year or so and initially I also encountered your problem which I assume is that your getting the 'Alignment failed' message after doing the 3-star align? As stated above, the best option is to power the mount with a powertank. I bought the Celestron Powertank (the smaller one, not the massive version!) and it works/worked a treat, it solved the problem straight off. Think you can get similar non-branded' tanks from Maplins or other electrical dealers, they'll do the job just aswell, but double check! I personally don't see how Celestron can supply the mount with a battery compartment, its completely useless, they could have filled that area of the mount with something useful like GPS etc. Anyway, give it a go : D You'll find that you can use any bright object, I used the moon, Jupiter and Arcturus once I think...it really is impressive. Then you can give it a series of objects to find and it will slew to them (or near enough to them) in no time. Also, as stated above, make sure the mounts level. One good thing about it not working is that your probably learning quite a bit more about the locations of objects manually? Try star-hopping to find objects, its quite easy and the red dot finder on the scope is a great help for it.
  6. Yeah, thats what I started off with. I uploaded a video to youtube, it wa recorded with a 12mp Canon EOS 450D but due to compression and format, its very blocky, you kinda get the jist though: YouTube - TimeLapse.m4v stick with the first few seconds, looks like there is some corruption.
  7. that is cool. good job on that! I had a go at one of my own, not on the night sky, as you pointed out the cloud situation has been heavy. I read somewhere that 700 frames at 21fps is equal to about 30 seconds running time, so I went for around 1500 to 2000 frames for the over a minute effect. What program did you use to put it all together? I can't find anything free that isn't without a trial time limit on it, I had been using GB Timelapse for the capture and another program (which I have forgotten the name of) for the processing. My camera battery held out actually : D
  8. ah didn't spot the digits. yeah i know he's spotted a few...hence the question. they should just name them 'barry' or 'george' or 'gretle' or 'agatha' etc, they're easier to remember than C2009R1 etc!! if I found one I'd call it Barry w@ng!
  9. Looks like it will still shine light out at 180 degrees, slightly better than the one outside my house which have an ability to shine at about 240 degrees. All the council need to do is purchase / or have designed ones that have a shade positioned around the light, that means the light shines downwards (where its needed!) and prevents rogue light, the ideal amount of light downshine should be around 55 degrees....... I think its been proven somewhere that at 60 degrees plus then streetlight hitting the floor doesn't provide ample enough lighting for people to see things.

  11. Hey all, just wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to use the GPS receiver found in a Samsung Wave on a Synta NEQ6-Pro mount..... Likewise there's a video of a guy using his wii remote via bluetooth to control a mount...could this be done with the accelerometer on a smartphone via bluetooth?
  12. goodo. just starhop til you get there. it was one one of the frst areas of the sky I trained my dobsonian on and once you get it they look very cool. you won't see much detail (i.e. the spiral arms from M81 or the jets from M82) but you will be able to clearly determine the size difference and the shape. You will also be likely to see NGC3077, providing the sky is dark enough, you might be able to fit all three in the field of view.....

  14. Hey all, Completely forgotten what the 'correct' name is for the beam/line/pillar of light seen in the sunset photo below. I am sure someon can correct me on its proper name: thanks in advance... Also had another image I mean to upload featuring a prism of light, kind of like a rainbow but not semi-circular and not as wide, looked like a rectangle of light only about 5 degrees in width. If anyone wants to see it just ask, I think I stil have it, would like to know what casued it and if it too has a name.
  15. 8inch dob. I had / have a Celestron 8inch dobsonian Starhopper and also had a Newstar 4 SE Maksutov Cassegrain. Go with the newtonian, the f/7 ratio (on most models) combined with the decent aperture size offers great views of most objects in the night sky. The Maksutov offers good contrast for planetary imaging but lacks widefield views and a has a slow focal ratio meaning dull objects appear.....dull. Adding a barlow makes it worse!
  16. Made a link to it earlier, they just showed it on the BBC 1 news. However, they showed a picture of the Sun and a scale (supposedly) version of the new star...tbh it didn't look like it was 250x as big (more like 4x) and also they said it was in a galaxy far far away...forgive me but isn't the LMC right next door!? I think the BBC needs to do some more research on it. I mean VV Cephei and the Pistol star were meant to be the largest.....and they are massive when you do a scale image next to the sun, kinda like a pea next to a beachball.

  19. Hello, Your mount's handset should have a feature that allows various tracking styles...a) sidereal, lunar and c) solar. You need to opt for the solar tracking. However you will need to align the mount with the North Celestial Pole (NCP) which is near enough Polaris. You will also need to input your time and date and location (in lat. & long.) and have the mount nice and level, also to have enough power to run your mount.

  21. If you had a good few images, say 10 individual 8 second shots at ISO1600 then yeah you probably would get something. You'll pick up the brightest stars no problem. As for the noise, well I use Canon Utilities Digital Photo Professional (DPP) viewer and that has a very useful noise reduction filter on it for processed images, you can reduce the chromatic and luminance noise. Its free aswell, just visit the Canon site and look in the support section for EOS dSLR's. Here's a link - scroll down for the .exe file : Digital Photo Professional Updater for Windows
  22. Whoa....they are really dark. Can't do much with them, sorry! You efforts are good with what you have got. Shame the ISO isn't a lot higher.
  23. Hmm, Maybe go for shorter exposure times as you have star trails from 60 seconds. I would aim for 25 second exposures, possibly 30 seconds if you have your camera with the lowest zoom level. If you can adjust the ISO level, perhaps increase it to 800 or 1000 and if you can adjust the f. ratio to a lower level like 3 or 4 that would be better. Though I don't know how much you can overide your camera settings. What size chip does the camera have? Your images look quite blocky, indicating either a smaller chip size or the jpeg setting is lower (i.e. at a lower resolution). If you can host the original images via imageshack or something (then link to them on here) I could have a play around with them if you like.
  24. Really? NY Moors are literally 7 miles away, just past Ozzie is okay, transport links are good, accessible via east coast main line, the A19, A1 and M62, aswell as Durham Tees Valley airport.
