  1. Just about to move the pier in the garden - yes I'm still using it another 8 years on :) I updated it about 6 years ago so that it is on it's own concrete slab and movable - with a lot of effort - so I can get different parts of the sky. Vibration is still a non-issue.

  2. resurrecting an old post I know, but just wondered if anyone else had attempted anything like this?

Or how the original poster is getting on with it?

Mine is still going fine :) just wish the clouds would go away more often. If I was doing it again, I haven't thought of anything I'd do differently, just make sure the base you are building on is solid.

  3. Great tutorial - thanks for taking the time and trouble to write it.

Just one point that had me scratching my head for a while is that I cut and pasted the -r and -objs 50 text into my Custom Setting and kept getting a "Cannot find file "50"" error. This went away when there was no space between the -r and the -objs as follows "-r-objs 50"

    Thanks again

    Steve

try using --objs (that's with two minus signs)

  4. I still think the concrete block system (shown on another thread) is worth considering, costs around £25 and takes about 15 minutes to make once you have all the components, cellular blocks, paving slab, 10/12mm screwed studding, nuts and washers, masonry drill bit and drill ready.

Indeed, I'm sure that would be almost as stable, but the Mrs wanted it to look nice too :)

  5. Ah yes that is way bigger. Mine is about 31" high which is approximately the same height I sat the tripod up to (it's lowest level), I don't think I would have gone much higher in a single column, I probably would have made it wider up to about half way.

  6. Curious to know his reasons. I like mine, it was easy to build (no digging) and is solid as a rock - if you give it a thump it barely vibrates and seems to dampen off immediately. The only detractor is that it's in the way if you want to image at the zenith with my 8" newt - but I've only done that once.

As I said in the OP, the main reason was for speed of setup, I just drop the top on an spin on 4 nuts, add the cables and away I go... PA is good enough for the guided sub lengths I'm doing now without having to re-do it every time I set up.
