  1. For a good primer on Sharcap etc, could I point you here, there's some really good tutorials. Astronomy Shed UK Astronomy Forum • View forum - TUTORIALS You'll need to sign up for full access.
  2. This one is rather handy! Philips SPC900NC uncovered Cheers Alun
  3. Just tried a quick reprocess follow a tutorial that I have come accross... this time stacked in DSS, then a bit of editing in GIMP. Not quite there, but getting there.
  4. That truely is splendid! I like it a lot... 5 sec subs, blimey, I was having to use 30 sec with my ST120... mind you, I'm guessing the camera had something to do with it too ;-) Cheers Alun
  5. I hope there'll be much more! I'm a cheap skate by nature, so won't be upgrading until I really have to ;-) Cheers Alun
  6. Thanks for the advice chaps, still working my way through the DSS manual, and some tutorials for processing, so I hope to revisit these images in the very near furture. As for more exposures... oh yes indeed! As the year progresses M51 will rise above the roof earlier giving me more time to image it... I just got to the point last night that it was too darn cold! I know... I'm a wimp ;-) Cheers Alun EDIT: just realised it was you Brian, taking your other advice too!
  7. Thanks chaps! I think if I work on my set up a bit (polar alignment etc) I should be able to increase the exposure times to bring down the noise... as I say, I also need to learn quite a bit about processing! You're comments are much appreciated, and are very encouraging. Cheers Alun
  8. Well, another wee bash tonight, this time M51 had just cleared the rooves. Not up there with the other offerings posted recently, but once again, I'm quite pleased. ST120, SPC900NC modded to SC3, 20x30sec exposures... no darks, once again roughly thrown at regisatx, pieces picked up and put through GIMP to be overprocessed ;-) Still reading up on processing!
  9. Hi Folks I posted these questions in my M82 thread http://stargazerslounge.com/imaging-deep-sky/131805-m82-sc3-webcam.html, but there's a lot of new threads there and people probably don't go searching for questions there, so I thought this would be more appropriate... Having had time to think about things, I have a few questions... 1) as I increased the exposure time, I was reducing the gain. Is this correct? Or should I have been using a lower gain to begin with? 2) I tried taking some darks... his may sound odd, but should they be completely black? I thought that the hot pixels would show up. (it may be that the camera was dropping frames when I took them). 3) Will a 0.5 focal reducer effectively halve my magnification? Thinking that I could fit M81 and M82 in the same shot... also had a quick look at M42 before the cloud obscured, and there was no way I was going to fit it all in, I suspect the same for M31. Cheers! Alun
  10. Soo... I was going to try and film it tonight... don't think I'll bother now, I'll just show everyone that clip instead! Crediting Theirry of course! Cheers Alun

Right, off to read them primers on processing! Cheers Alun
  12. Very nice, nice to see some more webcam images. You say 70 sec exposures, how many in total? Cheers Alun
  13. OK chaps, after many years of fiddling around with scopes, and a wee dabble with afocal photography, I've finally moved on and got my cheap ish set up working, and last night everything came together to let me have a go at "proper" (ish) imaging. I was using my ST120, unguided on my old CG5 Roboscope (finally working!). Despite having had my SC3 modded webcam for a good few years I've never had any success with it, so last night was an exercise in learning my way around Sharpcap and playing with the long exposure feature. For some reason I had a lot of frames that were black (need to look into that... dropped frames?), but I did manage to get a couple decent shots. Having spent a fair amount of time looking at tutorials for taking images, I now need to look into processing, however, this shot was 5x20sec shots thrown roughly into Registax, and bounced off random buttons without changing any settings! Have to say I'm reasonably happy, and with a bit more time setting up (you know, polar aligining and the like!) I hopeful that I can get longer subs and more details.
  14. Go Here... Philips SPC900NC uncovered. Convert a ToUcam Pro to a SPC900NC... and you'll find a link to the bin download. Cheers Alun
  15. ... double rats!... I shouldn't have looked! Early start again tomorrow, guess I'll have to sit this one out. Enjoy chaps.
  16. Rats... I didn't even check tonight... scared to go have a look as I'm not sure I can be a***d to get all the kit out. Been a long day! Glad you had a good time Scott ;-) Cheers Alun
  17. That went up today then... I posted a link for someone else yesterday and they were still £10. Guess that's supply and demand! Cheers Alun
  18. I for one am not laughing... looks very good. I can also empathise, have just come in from the garage where I've been "tinkering"... nothing worth showing just yet though! Cheers Alun

You're welcome... I ordered 2, one as a back up, did the flashing myself with my trusty XP laptop. Cheers Alun
  20. To add to what Ray has said, and again, I'm no expert, to determine the focal ratio, divide the focal length by the aperture. So my ST120 has a focal length of 500mm and aperture of 120mm, so 500/120=f5. Hope that helps a little.
  21. Well, I can only apologise... I've doomed us all! Tripod has just had a quick fix and sitting out the back ready... and I can see the clouds already! Cheers Alun
  22. I started out with afocal a few years ago, however, it was always a fiddle, and I reached the limit very quickly. Just got a SPC900NC, and have only had a quick play so far, but it already looks more practical that afocal. (also have a modded webcam for LX, but I need to sort out my alignment for that!). Cheers Alun
  23. Up in Aberdeenshire... just considering what I need to do to get my tripod back to gether for a sneaky viewing session this evening. Which means if I get eveything ready, it's going to cloud over, or if I leave it, it'll stay clear all night! Cheers Alun
