TBH Peter you really don't need a meter reading to tell you that the isle of Skye is dark..............very dark

Congratulations John.
It's a great achievement to bag the nag after so many tries.

I read a comment made on here the other day about the maximum magnification you can realistically use in UK skies (250x apparently). Therefore I was wondering what everyone else thinks this is, especially for you guys with 16" plus, apertures.
Regularly go way over 250x (20" Dob)
.......Oh! and it rules doing so

The best aperture is the biggest aperture you can transport to a dark sky alone.

How about a potential dob? Ingredients below...
Hoping to convert my Skywatcher 400p to a full truss...the company I work for gave me some 1 inch thick wood (very old spruce with some mega tight grain...) shelving that had been used in a laboratory for >50 years and was about to go to landfill...some pieces were warped but the rest were stable.
Mirror and rocker boxes have been weight tested and are very strong.
Still a long way to go but I am really looking forward to getting this made. I want to be able to take a decent size dob out in the wilds and still fit in a small car, or even hand pulled in a trolley...hoping to save some of the timber for my guitar building! All wood will be painted matt black and over-coated with exterior varnish.
Where's ya build thread Sam?

We need bigger scopes Niall! Our 15"s would look pretty skinny up against those big jobs the Mob has...
Maybe, but you have those Canadian skies Gerry
You have the true wilderness that nowhere in the UK can complete with......... I envy you buddy

Hmmmmm it's not looking too good for Elan mate. At least you'll have a great Strehl ratio with no central obstruction! Not much good for observing though
We could be sharing my secondary at this rate.
Pity you did't use Webster clamps on your scope Mike or we could just take it in turns to use my UTA

Was going to say, this is fast becoming a joke.............but there's nothing fast about it
