My husband known here to some of you as Freddie passed away earlier this morning, He knew this day would come because he had been very ill for some time. He wanted me to make a last post for him in the event that it did. He is at peace now and with the stars he loved so much.

Hi Everyone. Just thought I'd share my first ever image of M42 and say thank you to everyone who helped me out on here. I had so many troubles with my mount and after using the help provided from this site, I can confirm the mount is working like a charm, finally. This is a single 240 sec exposure of M42 with an un-modded Canon 6D, no guiding, no stacking...I'm so happy. I now have to learn to auto guide with PHD 2....so you'll be hearing from me soon. Thank you all

Not sure what to make of it, the sky has gone an unusual black colour with loads of white dots in it, like old fashioned tarmac drives. Not sure what is going on up there so have pointed a camera skywards to investigate............

Out last night in the observatory, an interesting night, first night for quite awhile. I was starting to pack up and close down about 1230 when I heard someone on his phone in the lane a couple of feet away. Deciding to wait until he finished and buggered off I stayed quite until I realised he was not going away so got on with with closing down, it was then I heard him say that there was someone in his neighbours shed. It dawned on me that he was speaking to the police and I was the subject, hitting the security switch I got the lights on and greeted him over the fence, we both laughed about it, closed down and got into the house before I had to answer to the police :)

My first Ortho just arrived, namely Baader Classic Ortho 18mm. I considered many EPs and I needed something in the range of 18-24mm, as currently I have only 15mm and then 32mm. Quick daytime test revealed more vivid colours and somewhat brighter and more contrasty image compared to my current favourite ES70 15mm. Eye relief is nowhere near as bad as I expected. So excited, like a little kid! Can't wait for nighttime!

Photographed my first proper star the other night. I couldn't get my kit setup for nebulae in time and it was nearing 1 am. Capella from the constellation Auriga. It was also my first time using dark frames and it really did a great job removing the hot and cold pixels from my overall image. I also am aware i was getting some star travel. I am not using autoguiding but instead the HEQ5's auto slewing. Still from the amount of time I had to do this, I'm pretty proud of it at least. Learnt a lot and getting much more comfortable with my scope! Clear skies appear to be so rare since I've gotten back into astronomy. Must be a curse of 2017 me thinks! Pesky, out.

Spent an hour or so in the shed on the ongoing 'Spectrometer Mk3' build. I'm not convinced this 'Heath Robinson' contraption of mine is going to work but hey-ho - I've started so I'm going to finish. On a slightly more positive note, this particular DIY journey into the unknown has been relatively inexpensive and the bits I have purchased are easily recyclable for more and the equally pointless future projects with which I am determined to fill my ongoing retirement from gainfull enterprise. One of the minor benefits of being a compulsive hoarder and inveterate tinkerer is a shed full of stuff. I really like stuff and sheds, stuff in sheds and sheds with stuff in 'em. My shed runneth over with stuff! Thats why I've got two sheds! George in Oulton Broad sitting on a sofa contemplating the philosophy of 'stuff in sheds' and the imminent possibility of Pizza .

I am currently loving Sequence Generator Pro - the automation combined with plate solving is a game changer for me. Forget star alignment - I now polar align with Sharpcap (5 mins) and then plate solve straight onto target (another 2 mins). Auto-focus takes a further 2 mins so I am imaging within 10 mins of starting to polar align which is just brilliant. I also love my new camera - the QHY163m. Just buy one. Seriously. Do it.
