Hi All Sorry for the late reply and thank you all for giving your suggestions I have now purchased a new motherboard and fitted it, as you have to take the motors out to get at the two retaining screws I thought I might aswell do the town belt drive mod while replacing the board and I am glad to say it is one of the best things to do with this mount as I can hardly hear the motors and there is little or no backlash, I did read all the suggestions and they were what made me do the project.   6. I image with my Tal 200K and have recently changed to a Baader diamond steeltrack SCT focuser and this adaptor. Be very wary that the back focus is limited. I am using the SX mini filter wheel, incorporating the off axis guider and an Atik 460, and it is very tight. I've had to fettle a little to get it all to focus, with only 4mm of focus movement left to play with. steve
  7. 5-7mm is the range you need for Jupiter and Saturn with an 8" dob in my experience. Conditions will determine how much magnification you can use at each observing session. The moon appears to be approximately 0.5° in diameter and your telescope has a focal length of 1200mm so to get the minimum eyepiece focal length you can use you can use Fl(eyepiece) = 0.5° * 1200mm / AFoV(°) So if you want to buy Starguiders with 60° AFoV Fl(e) = 600 / 60 = 10mm Of course it is good to have a bit of space around the moon so you want a slightly longer focal length, meaning the 12mm Starguider would be a good choice.
  8. I also use the DSM app. In my opinion it's a pretty reliable, cheap alternative to a dedicated SQM meter working down to about SQM 21.5.
  9. Two rules that I've applied over all the years that I've been in this hobby are: 1. Keep house / family and astro budgets completely separate. If the money was not "disposable" it did not get spent on the hobby. 2. No loans to fund hobbies.
  10. Struggled over the last few days--the more I processed the more unnatural things appeared. I just was not satisfied with ful resolution viewing--even with a down sampled version. I'll admit that these changes may seem at first subtle and unworthy of mention. But its the last few honing sweeps that make a blade truly sharp. To my eye the improvement in "naturalness" to the flower are obvious. getting there.

  12. 6mm is s good place to start with the 200p for Jupiter and Saturn although both planets are a bit low down for best viewing at the moment. You might also want an 8mm.   13. My 60th birthday in July. The family are going to club together to buy me a telescope that I will keep. It is likely that the WO 103mm Zenithstar will be the one. I will post a review.
  14. Astronomy in comparison to other interests I like to indulge in such as cycling, hill walking, wild camping etc, is the front runner by a fair margin in terms of cost of each selective item. Not that other activities are inexpensive, efficient dependable equipment can be costly including whether or not second hand. Mixing up astronomy with other interests becomes a beneficial distraction and in some ways a complementary pursuit, which retains a balanced overall approach to what you do and the extent of equipment you may have. As had been mentioned, you may in time arrive at some kind of clarity of awareness that you have accomplished a core set-up, where by each part is interconnected, a kind of objective jigsaw, which if one component was taken away i.e. sold, it may unpick or unravel. The main requirement is retaining the passion and dedication, that despite the frequent unfavourable weather, gives you a feeling of uplifting and contentment each time, whether in a suburban back garden, sharing on an outreach event or venturing out on a dark sky trip, those moments become priceless.
  15. I had a large hornets nest in a villa I was renting in France. After discussions with locals in the village the fire brigade came out and removed it. I was surprised how big hornets were as I'd never seen them until then.

Only 66 degrees which is a WA at best. The identical Skywatcher version is much cheaper.   19. Hornets seem to be the issue here at the moment. There were quite a few wasp queens about earlier in the month, still looking for places to set up home for the year, but now there seem to be hornets everywhere. We've had four in the house in the last week. James

  23. Hi @palazer and welcome to SGL. You may want to have a read of this topic/post... For a Lunar/Moon filter, I would recommend a variable polarising filter. I use this type ---> ...only available in 1.25" Question: Do you want 1.25" or 2"?
  24. Fortunately the sun finally came out to give me a real sky target. C-Du-C badly overshot on a Goto slew to the Sun after clicking on it. So I reduced UT by two hours in AWR as it was showing local time. Which immediately made the Sun's coordinates wrong in AWR. Syncing on the sun in C-Du-C, with the telescope manually pointed to the Sun, solved that problem. I now have matching LST and the correct coordinates. Now I'll see if if it can find the parking spot and then slew back to the sun. Success on both counts! Happy days are here again.. tra-la-la-la!
