  2. Regarding the extent to which unhappy owners are vocal or not I would add this: particularly in the case of expensive products, people having a lot of trouble sometimes keep quiet about it. This may be out of embarrassment at having made what they feel to be a bad choice or, perhaps more likely, they are anticipating the possibility that they may want to be selling it on... Olly
  3. I haven't considered this. I made the mistake of trying to image with a 10 inch LX200 many years ago. Initially I tried it on a wedge, which was in itself a horrible thing that was all but impossible to polar align. (It was a Meade wedge, not a Millburn.) Once aligned the tracking was dire and the whole thing wobbled. I then deforked it to try it on a GEM but the optics were indifferent and the image scale was unrealistic for guiding. I ended up feeling that I ruined a nice visual scope and got nowhere with an imaging one. It was a treat to start afresh with the 14 inch and leave it in Alt Az to serve as a superbly productive visual instrument, something it does so well. For several years I've had a 10 inch Meade flatfield SCT which I've still not used. I know it can give good images because the previous owner used it here. The question is, though, whether it can beat the TEC which is working well at 0.9"PP. Could a standard 14 inch SCT like mine beat the TEC even if mounted on the Mesu? I very much doubt it. I find little to choose (on the same targets) between the TEC and the 14 inch ODK I used here for a while. In your case 2M is a workable focal length on the right mount if matched to the right pixel size (possibly binned.) The corrected FOV offered by the 6.3 reducer is still quite small but there are plenty of small targets for high res images. Everything I've posted from the TEC/Atik 460 has been cropped, sometimes quite heavily. If you used an OAG and could get to a sensible imaging pixel scale (for me that would be about 0.9"PP) then it might be worth trying your 12 inch. On the other hand the fork mount is so much nicer for visual... Olly

  5. Yes that's correct, I made readings over a 7.5 hour period, so got just over one orbit of the stars.
  6. I'm afraid the Minitrack also needs 2 ballheads to work. I'm not sure it will be an upgrade, unless you're specifically looking for something that doesn't require any battery
  7. Actually, they released recently an adapter that can hold a polar scope or a laser The new version (LX3) also includes a polar scope Looks like they're listening to their customer! There's a pretty active Facebook group where people share their ideas.
  8. Thanks for the info. I am in dept 82 Tarn et Garonne near the border split of Tarn et Garonne/Lot/Lot et Garonne. If you can find Bourg de Visa on a map I am three k’s away. What’s your general location? I have looked at focusers in general and saw they were expensive. I don’t mind modifying the scope tube to take a two inch unit but if it is close in price to just buying a pds then I will probably just do that. I still have the eq2 mount so I could make that a simple in the van outfit for when I am night fishing. No harm in mixing the two great pastimes of my life.
  9. If you can stretch to it, then go for a macro lens. They have an incredibly flat field and thus work really well for Astro. The nifty fifty needs to be stopped to around f/4 or f/5.6 to get the best out of it for Astro.

  11. Thanks All for the track input. Looking at the wall/bearer cross sections hopefully self explanatory. Not a great deal of loading as the obsy will be quite small. Footings: scalping's with a very liquid cement binding. Paving slabs over the footings with treated sleepers spreading the loading across the slabs. Waterproof membrane comes next with the floor joist bearer's pinning the membrane to the sleepers. Joists to support the T&G flooring. Walls sit on a weather board to take water away from the structure, Treated shiplap cladding over a CLS frame - internal cladding in 12mm OSB...
  12. I really like this Carole - the clarity of the blue, gold and white stars in the cluster is outstanding and the blue star on the left beautifully completes the composition. I may have to try imaging this one day - last time I did it was antiquated equipment back in the stone-age of my hobby David
  13. I find the nifty fifty stars not really usable on the outer half or third of the picture, even stopped down at f4. And once you crop, the equivalent focal length increases. Was really looking at the Sigma 50mm, but it's quite more expensive. Yet, as my Sigma 105 f2.8 is incredibly crisp, I might give their 50mm a try.
  14. Nice Carole, what I'm wondering is whether the great star colour comes from RGB or is it already there in the Luminance? I'm using a DSLR and, differently from the LPS-CCD and IDAS V4, the IDAS P2 leaves more yellow in the pass band, to be used on stars, not only on nebulae. So, just wondering if I should get a P2 or a D2, instead of an Astronomik. Wish I could get an image like yours. Fabio
  15. If you are thinking of extended objects like galaxies and nebulae, the larger scope cannot make them brighter, it can only make them bigger for a given surface brightness. On the other hand, the big scope shows a narrower and narrower field of view, making object location harder and spoiling the view of larger objects.

  18. Come to think of it.. I also switched from high siderial rates of 0.9 to lower rates of 0.6 on both axis.
  19. And if it is a solid-tube ota, it could be mounted on a solid EQ mount at some future date when finances allow, if he wanted to go that route.
  20. I saw a pretty large improvement when I switched guide cameras. I am now using my old imaging cam, imx183 chip with it's tiny 2.4um pixels to guide through a zwo 60mm guide scope. This means I nearly have identical resolution on my imaging as my guiding. Was getting 0.5 to 0.6 regularly on an unmodded EQ6 over 3 days during Easter, using the predictive pec algorithm. Seeing was good though..

  23. Your asi224 using livestacking might be your best bet, using a Dslr really is an ergonomic stretch for live viewing and then the small screen too. With your 224 you can livestack wide fields with a camera lens or all sky too, I am doing it with my imx385 and it's just fancy with my 16 or 17 inch laptop screens. I don't save anything and delete everything Sharpcap saves as for me this is just a sub for visual observations of the deep sky so when I roll my portable digital obsy back in the garage for covering nothing beyond the shorthand in my logs is undertaken. I am using the Zwo asi385mc as it is their recommended camera for eaa, they have advised me well the camera is very sensitive and has an ampglow reduction circuit that really brings it under my Bortle class 4 skies. I am new to eeva myself...and glad to share what little I've learned so far. Best of Luck and Clear Skies of Course Freddie...
