Mars Best crop

Hawksmoor

The early hours of the 1st Dec 2022 has provided the best opportunity to date for me to use my 127mm Meade Apo to image Mars from Lowestoft this season. This image is a 25% stack from 5000 frames captured with my venerable QHY5-llcolour camera. Not the best of nights being both cold and damp. Surprised how much smaller Mars is from two years ago. Pleased to just about see both ice caps and Olympus Mons. Used PIPP, AS3!, Registax6, Affinity2, Topaz Denoise AI and FitsWork4.

Really nice image. Well done. I just processed my attempt and only a little bit of detail came out. I feel Mars is more strongly affected by bad seeing than Jupiter...

Thank you for the kind comment. I find processing Mars tricky. If you over do the sharpening or the red channel, the image looks unreal. I think I over emphasized the red at the expense of green in this image.

Yes I agree, thin high cloud and or the jet stream over head and you might as well pack up for the night with Mars. This year Mars is quite small and with a 3x Barlow my 5 inch refractor struggles to resolve fine detail. I'm getting on a bit and my eye sight makes focussing ever more difficult even with all the hardware and software aids. Still I refuse to give up but I must admit the cold and damp nights are a tad discouraging. Best regards from George in a windy Lowestoft.
