Jupiter 13/03/2017 Io eclipse animation

This is the final animation made from 60 individual stacked images each made from 2 minutes of data taken duing the night of 13/14 March. The gap in the sequence was caused when my camera battery died. Recharging it took about 30 minutes. This took a lot of effort to process each image but it was well worth it. Strange to be converting the original video to a single frame, only to combine those frames to make a video...

Scope: SW Skymax 150 F/D = 12 plus a 2x Televue Barlow giving an effective F/D ~ 24, I also used a Baader fringe killer.

Camera: Canon 550D, 640X480 movie crop mode, ISO = 800, exposure = 1/60s.

Processing:

Each stacked image was made of 2 mins of video (7200 frames). The best 2000 frames were selected and decompressed in Pipp. These frames were sent to Registax where the were aligned using between 40 and 50 align points. The frames comprising the best 90% in quality were retained. The frames were stacked with 2x drizzle. RGB align corrected for residual CA, The first 3 wavelets were enhanced (interval = 1) and the gamma + colour balance were altered.

Final gif frames were cropped and centred in Gimp and the gif was produced using the GNU/Linux convert command.

The atmosphere really stabilised just as the GRS came into view. It was good fun (but a lot of work) capturing Jupiter and I have a new respect for the power of the Televue 2x Barlow. I will have another go at Jupiter soon.

No problem!

I really love Jupiter, seen it so many times yet still one of my favourite targets. Im glad that with all that hard work you got this great animation. I love seeing the planet in motion and  knowing you captured almost a whole rotation really makes this a great image for me.

Was just showing my friend this clip, she loved it too, but I noticed this time the moon transiting. The shadow is obvious but looking more you can see the moon passing on the disc and after it passes. 

Your hard work truly paid off.

Wow, thanks! Your comments are too kind.

I struggle to see Io in the earlier frames but then it just pops out near to edge of Jupiter...I would like to know whether if the first frames were sharper I would have seen Io against Jupiter or whether it is just too difficult to see.

Anyway, it's a beautifully clear night here tonight but I'm focusing on DSOs so Jupiter may have to wait for nest time!

ITS GREAT!

Only just noticed you do say in the description Io is transiting but I didn't look at that as I was blown away by the image.

Last night was reasonably clear for me too. was planning on observing the Leo triplet and M64 but by time I got the scope out... CLOUDS! was clear enough to have a quick look at Jupiter but wasn't at its best, obviously.

Last night was clear but windy, my guide-scope had a tough time keeping everything on target. I haven't yet stacked any images, but I will upload images soon. TBH, given the windy weather, I would have probably got more out of the evening imaging Jupiter...

ill still be very interested to see what you have shot and will be looking forward to the final piece.

Still plenty of time to enjoy Jupiter though.

I really need to start looking into imaging... guide-scope :s I can imagine what its for but iv not heard of it before.. still new to this stuff.
