It’s alive!

It’s very rewarding to see the motor moving 😊 Few issues though- it’s not a very linear response at all. I have a feeling that I need to make the step pulse train symmetrical high/low and just vary the frequency. The Trinamic driver I’m using has this feature called microplier where it interpolates input steps to output 256 micro steps for each input step (or 2 as that’s minimum input resolution I can chose without using serial interface) Nice feature as it makes the motor really smooth but it relies on reading last step period to calculate internal frequency so I think the fixed short pulse/ varying delay I’ve implemented is screwing its calculations up. Shouldn’t be too hard to convert my signal to a nice symmetrical pulse train though. I’m aiming for 1 revolution per second max speed which is plenty when driving the coarse knob of the Moonlite.

Strange- I uploaded a video and it plays on my phone but not on my PC 🤨

Try a different format AVI ?

Anyway I have a problem that doesn’t make sense to me. My maximum output frequency is 500hz at present. The TMC2209 silent step stick driver has minimum 2 microstepping input which it’s set to so that should be 250 full steps per second. My motor is 400 step so that should be 1.6 sec per revolution BUT it’s taking about 24 seconds per rev! Which suggests to me it’s actually doing 32 microsteps at the input 🤔 Maybe there’s an error in the data sheet or maybe I’m just not understanding it correctly- I do find the Trinamic data sheets pretty unclear...

Argh goddamn Trinamic 🤦‍♂️ The data sheet on Farnell’s website is labelled as 2209 but it seems it’s for the 2208 and the config is quite different. In fact the min input microsteps is 8 for the 2209 and as I suspected I actually have it configured to 32 microsteps which I really don’t need or want 😡 So I guess I’ll need to buy a 2208 if I want the 2 microstep and 256 interpolation

I don’t know how to do that Dave- I just uploaded it straight from my phone. It works on android too but seemingly only sound on a windows pc. Strange is I’ve posted other videos which I assumed had worked- didn’t realise there was a problem - maybe something new 🤷‍♂️

Windows has been a pain recently messing with video codecs, I used to watch the BTCC live qualifying on ITV Player but it no longer works on there so have to watch it on the wifes Mac Book now.

If you've got the time and can be bothered you can upload it to YTube and post a link on here.
