Hi from Warwickshire

I've always been drawn to the night skies. Travelling around Southern Europe and North Africa in the 70's there were many times sleeping under the stars. Minimal light pollution and a sky like black marble covered in grains of salt. Never forgotten. A hundred hobbies later I'm thinking of the stars again. I have no telescope. My plan is to save 2k over the next year, learn from the best on the net, you guys, and aim for the universe. Thinking Nexstar Evoloution 9.25, but who knows, anything can happen in the next turn of the zodiac. ;)

Hi Alf, welcome to SGL from another Warks. member  Good luck in your search for a telescope, don't wait until you've got your 2K though, you can start relatively cheaply with some 10 x 50 binoculars or a 2nd hand 'scope and mount. Unfortunately the skies over Warwickshire are not quite as clear as N Africa!

Hope you enjoy SGL Alf.

It is a sight to behold is the Night Sky when it is free from intrusive pollution of any kind.

Sadly the areas where that can still be the case, are getting fewer yearly.

The really sad part are the  Inner Cities, which prevent seeing almost any celestial objects other that the Moon, and the brighter Planets.

How many youngsters are being denied the inspiration of star filled skies, a situation that has existed for years now,

and probably getting worse.

A fundamental perception of how insignificant we are  is lost in the glow of night lights

of all types.

However, we have to make the best of what is possible .

Best Wishes.

Ron.

Welcome to SGL!

If you have the patience to save up I would recommend whilst saving getting a feel for what you can get second hand and aim to get your main kit second hand - you can get a lot more for your money if you have the patience.

When budgeting the cost of a telescope would be a small proportion of the total cost - a mount and eyepieces will big a big part of the cost, and so will computers if you want a computer guided scope.

In the mean time I would recommend getting some binoculars and joining one of the local astronomy clubs - you may get the chance to check out other people's kit and find out what you prefer for free.
