Modded DSLR: my method to restore AF, double UV/IR filtering and retain sensor cleaning

Hi guys,

I just wanted to share my way of retaining the auto-focus on a modded DSLR (1000D, LPF#2 removed). At the same time, there will be improved UV/IR filtering (doubled) and the sensor cleaning function will be retained. For this approach, you'll need an extra LPF#1 filter (if you are careful the filter will not be harmed).

Apparently, if you remove the little rubber thing in the LPF#1 carrier (the red thing on this picture http://dslrmodifications.com/xsmod028.jpg ) there is enough space to fit in two LPF#1 filters. Now if we assume that the LPF#1 and LPF#2 filters have approximately the same thickness, then with this procedure re-shimming is not really necessary anymore.

Before the extra LPF#1 filter was installed I could easily do better than the AF by manual focussing, but now I can't do this anymore because the AF is accurate (if anyone would like an example picture, just let me know). Obviously, the UV/IR filtering is also doubled and the sensor cleaning is retained (just connect the ribbon cable of the outer sensor in it's proper socket, leave the other one alone). Of course this approach doesn't restore the AF down to the 0.1 mm (like re-shimming could do), but I at least can't distinguish my autofocused images from my manually focused image.

I hope you found this interesting,

Greetings
