KAF-16200 - New sensor from ON Semi

ON Semi have announced the KAF-16200 sensor:

Size: 27mm x 21.6mm (APS-H)

Pixels: 4500 x 3600 (16.2 MP)

Pixel size: 6 microns

Well-depth: 41ke-

QE Peak: 56%

QE Ha: 48%

Sounds interesting. The size sits it between the 8300 and 11000 sensors. QHY and FLI have already announced they are producing CCD's with this sensor, I wonder if Atik will as well.

Interestingly they list astrophotography as one of the applications, it's nice to see a sensor manufacturer acknowledge they have a market in astrophotography.

I saw this previewed on the QHY site some time ago;  it certainly looks like a well matched chip to longer focal length scopes - high resolution with a reasonable FOV. It will give a massive FOV for those using widefield astrographs. I too look forward to hearing from Atik and others about their plans for this sensor

6 um pixels... I have communicated with FLI regarding this sensor. A grade one sensor will be $7495, and a grade two sensor (max 15 defect columns) will be $6495. This is in the Microline body and includes shutter. From what I heard, QHY will be much cheaper but will most likely sport an engineering grade sensor, which is well below the grade two sensor in terms of defects.

The interesting thing is that the QE is almost twice that of the 8300, but the difference in pixel area is only 23% up, so better technology at work for sure.

FLI have apparently already sold a few and are now waiting for the next batch of sensors from On Semiconductors. As I am hesitant to fork out for a 50100 right now, I may get a 16200 in January and use it with the TEC-140 at Olly's.

I thought the QE was more or less identical but the 16200 has a slight db increase. 

Where have you seen this info Per ?

Yikes! My bad - I was too quick in reading the data sheet and took colour against mono. Sorry! You are correct, so must be about the same technology then... Still nice real estate ;)

No Problem.

The read noise of the 16200 may be lower and the full well higher so that would improve things slightly. The APS-H format is very similar the older Canon 1D professional series. I haven't heard yet what the RBI situation is like but I would have thought that FLI will use the usual lower temperature and RBI mitigation routines. Can't be that bad with such small pixels ??

Looks like it could be a useful upgrade for my Baby-Q as a replacement for my 8300 based QHY9. Sensor comparison:

I think the QHY sensors will probably be grade 2. The engineering grade mentioned on their website are test samples only.

Read noise is on the high side as is dark current but I don't really care about either as they're both overwhelmed by sky noise here in the UK.
