starlight xpress

Just bought the SXV-H9 and have set it up  after downloading the drivers and software. Now I can connect the camera I can focus to a degree and I can take a photo of the tree in the distance, I can even play with it adding colour adjusting stretch contrast etc but for the life of me I cannot save it at all even though I got a few options, I can save as fits save  as RAW save as fits colour but when I press save I get a little box up  (save file as  **) another box to show which folder to save it to and then another box  which says C drive I think. so im clicking on the folder which i made titled  " astronomy" and click ok, but nothing. I was thinking save it as a FIT file or even a RAW file and open it in something else like lightroom. Im doing something wrong but no idea what im doing wrong

Well it was quite confusing downloading, it comes up something like SXV-H9 subcolusb something like that. I have managed to find them now  as "autosave" . The next thing on my list is going to be  SPG but until then this will have to do

Hi guys, I have been playing around with my new camera (still waiting for a cloudless night) I have set it up and everything is working fine the problem I have ATM is with the starlight express software I am taking photos of a mountain opposite me just to get my head round it. So with that in mind I thought I would try out SGP now it works great the mounts connected the cameras connected I can take some subs (of sheep lol) but how do I convert that into colour, do I need to save the file and open in photoshop?. Its a whole new ball game for me ATM and feel like im diving in at the deep end. I quite liked the starlight software but the save file seems very obscure

Images from OSC cameras need to be debayered to show colour.

This is normally done using the stacking software but can also be done in Photoshop.

No idea about that software, I use Nebulosity and that automatically saves the image captures to the designated folder.

Hi

SGP is a great capture only suite ( I love it ) , but you need another program to process your image

I presume you have a mono h9 ( no c mentioned )  then you will need to capture individual subs through RGB filters and combine them in program like astroart or Pixinsight ( my fav :) )  and there are many others

these will also debayer a OSC image as well

capture is the easy part

Reading through this is so reminiscent of what happens with so much technical equipment. Is it that manufacturers can't be bothered to provide even the simplest of guides? Or assume (as has occurred here) that the customer will find out how to use a piece of kit from the Internet.

One could always try the user manual snappily titled, " SXV-H9C ExView‘Megapixel’USB One-Shot Colour CCD camera User manual "

Is this camera secondhand ? If so it sounds like the original owner hasn't provided all the bits one would get with a new camera. With the OSC SX camera I've tried, the software did debayer but I regard it as amongst the worst software out there. I found AA and Maxim very good, have heard that Nebulosity is very good too.

Oh that brightened up an otherwise dull damp day :)

I found that AA is so intuitive that it almost did all the work for me ! Dave.

That's good. I don't know AA personally. It's a real art writing a good manual. Having built a few bits of kit for other people to use I know how difficult it is. The problem in a part is that when you've developed something for months or even years it's very hard to imagine yourself in the shoes of someone coming to it for the first time. Anyway we're getting a bit off topic. :-)

Nice thread, I've just acquired an SXV H9 mono so had a trial run. All the comments really helpful- especially the FITS Liberator. After a struggle opening the images initially I was truly liberated by this! Just been using the SX interface so far but may move on to Astro Art or Maxim soon, just reading up on them. If I get anything decent I'll stick them up with the settings.

Cheers,

Chris

Had a trial run last night with the Sx software interface. Found it a bit fiddly, particularly getting the object onto the focus window. Been looking at the demo of Nebulosity today which looks pretty good value and easy to use in the field. V4 has a good range of pre/post processing tools as well. I'll give it a whirl and let you know how it goes!

Cheers,

Chris

I've been testing the demo of Nebulosity 4 to capture and initial processing such as alignment and stacking. I found it really easy to find the target, good focus aids and easy multiple captures. Then used the DDP, stretch and curves to bring out the image. As this was a demo the image is downgraded but the whole process was so intuitive I'ce forked out £60 for the full version. Plus it links to the PhD guiding program.

So here I go...when the skies clear!

Chris
