Recommended Posts

Thanks to the forums, I've downloaded the excellent stellaruium for windows 8.1 , I've also downloaded 'virtual moon atlas', are there any other good [better] software knowledge base or moon Atlases available please? Likewise, which free apps are available for android? many thanks

I have a file as thick as a phone-book of good freeware. But most of it is rather specialized to certain aspects of astronomy. If you could narrow your request, I could dredge something up. In the meanwhile, have you ever heard of Cartes du Ciel? It's similar to Stellarium, and some like it better. Many feel it leaves Stellarium in the weeds for telescope-control, though I haven't heard the jury yet on the latest release of Stellarium. Anywho - here's Sky Charts (Cartes du Ciel) - Free:

Enjoy!

Hey! We can turn this thread into a competitive sport! My turn!

Here's a new 'Planetarium-Software-Program' from a guy in the Czech Republic:

He's a nice guy who dropped by. The latest version is out. Do look for a link to the link to the full GSC Catalog. It's HUGE, so give yourself some time when you find it!

Very good listing, Peter. I found one I'd been trying to remember! I think we're going to keep Bill off the streets at night for a month at this rate. Now here's another good resource:

You won't believe what's next.....

Wow! outstanding gentlemen, my sincere thanks   Some awesome software. I've download several & bookmarked the rest.

 Your sure right about keeping me occupied Dave, but occupied in a great way. As to other software, the basics really, a good moon atlas & phases, solar system, then work my way out i guess.

My apologies for not getting back earlier, spent the afternoon being pushed around cloths shops [ :help2: yuk!!]

Many thanks again guys, am much obliged

I like COELIX LITE, the free version of the sky mapping, ephemeris and virtual planetarium software.

Here's a nice one I just found - a Mars screensaver. It show a very realistic Mars rotating with a very realistic star-field as it's background. I'm not doing it justice - it's really nice! Here's a link:

http://mars-screensaver.software.informer.com/download/

Pay no attention to the Facebook sign-in screen. Just click on Save at the pop-up prompt. When you un-zip it and install it, I suggest saying YES when it asks you if you want it set now as your screensaver. This way you'll know which one it is. You can always change it afterwards of course. It also will drop an icon on your desktop for you to have fun with.

You'll like it!
