You will be limited to about 20 - 25 seconds exposure unless you are tracking so start at that then adjust Iso until you get a decent result. Try wide open to start but be prepared to stop down a but if your lens isnt sharp wide open.

Focussing is best done on a distant object in the daylight then a piece of gaffer tape to stop it creeping.

Then practise !

Hi, I wrote up a quick guide to shooting the Milky Way with a kit lens that you might find helpful. The Samyang lens gives a wider field of view so you'll be able to use slightly longer exposures before trailing becomes apparent. The faster optics will give better results and it will be easier to focus as well.
