Brian may on patrick moores legacy

Thanks for posting that, Andrew. By the sounds of it Brian May has done a good job. I too think it's a pity that Farthings couldn't become a museum and study centre, but I guess if it's not possible then so be it. I have to say I'm a little surprised it's not possible. If the National Trust can turn John Lennon's ordinary house in Liverpool into a museum why not Patrick's? But maybe that's not a fair comparison. Selling Farthings with profits going to Chichester Planetarium seems a good use of any monies raised.

Yes. Interesting what Brian was saying about the sale of some of Patrick's possessions at auction. I must say the media misrepresented what was being sold by giving the impression it was all his 'worldly goods'. I was slightly alarmed when I heard that, feeling they should have been kept together. So I feel reassured now that Brian May explained the situation.

The  Amateur Astronomy community of the UK.  owes you and David McCahearty A huge Thank You for the time and great effort

you have put into organising Sir Patricks works and possessions David. It really must have been a nightmare operation.

I'm sure the Great man will be grateful indeed, as he is sure to have  be presiding over the efforts you made.  He'll rest easy now.

Job well done .

It wouldn't surprise me if had Patrick Moore been asked before his death whether he would prefer Farthings to become a museum to his achievements or whether the "important stuff" should go somewhere appropriate and the rest be sold to help fund projects such as the Chichester Planetarium and the Herschel Museum that he would have chosen the latter.

So I think what has been done is quite fitting.

Thanks for posting the link  -  I'm glad to see Brian and the others have put so much time and effort into Patricks legacy. It is a shame that Farthing's couldn't be kept as it is but of course it was never going to be practical to do so.

What about a Blue Plaque for Patrick at Farthings????

Some recognition by the astronomical community

(I tried to do similar for Sir William Huggins for his home and observatory at Tulse Hill, but as his house was demolished and replaced by a block of 1960's flats they would not allow it.)

Nice idea Ken. Who knows Brian's email address to suggest it?

I find it sad that questions were even asked about what was going on with Patrick's estate. Given the huge care people like Brian took of him in his later years, I think it was always in very safe hands to be dealt with as carefully and sensitively as possible. Sounds like they have come up with some very creative and interesting ways of preserving SPM's memory and legacy.

Could not Farthings be a Holiday home, where Amateur Astronomers and their family could rent by the week or two weeks.

Summer or Winter months.

It is in a nice area, and there would be much interest in the house due to it's previous resident, and history.

The income from such a venture would help it's upkeep.

Ron.
