Photoshop CC and plug ins - Help Needed Please

PeterCPC

Recommended Posts

I just downloaded a trial version of Photoshop CC to see if it's worth the monthly outlay and immediately hit a problem. I want to instal plug ins like GradientXterminator but can't wotk out how to do it and Adobe were no help at all.

I have the plug ins in Paintshop and they work fine but, if I can't get them to work in PSCC then it's no use to me. I have several like HLVG etc.

Anyone have any idea how to do this and I am not a wizz at computers/software so in language I can understand please. My PC is on Windows 7 64 bit.

The Gradientxterminator website has instructions for installing the plugin. http://www.rc-astro.com/resources/install_plugin.html

I don't use GX personally but Doug German has produced some free videos on how to use Photoshop for astrophotography including how to apply Gradientxtermintor. They're available on his website http://www.budgetastro.net/photoshop-basics.html

Another possibility is that the trial version has limited functionality of course.

That's a point. Though it struck me from Peter's post that he didn't know how to install the plugin rather than having problems with it. Hence my earlier link to the instructions in the xterminator website.

Yes, the GTX site has the info. I also did the trial but I can't remember if I added GTX at that point or after the purchase.

Peter,

What can PS CC do that PaintShopPro can't do for you?

That's what I was trying to establish.

The trouble with these is that they refer to the previous version i.e. Photoshop CS and the path for installing the plug ins in CC is not the same so it doesn't work.

I will try a bit more but, if I can't find a way to install these plug ins I'll stick with Paintshop. I would have liked to have trialed a version of Photoshop CS but, of course, it is no longer available.

Thanks anyway chaps.

I see. Maybe you could let the person who wrote Gradientxtermintor know. He might have an answer and if he doesn't I'm sure he will want to find one since he's selling this software.

Done that. If I can solve this I will put it on here so that others may benefit.

Did you download the 32 or 64 bit version?  The plugin locations are different in both. Also if you download the 64 bit version then you will need the 64 bit versions of some of the plugins (GXT for instance needs a purchased upgrade to go form the 32 bit to 64 bit versions...)

I have both 32 and 64 bit version of CC installed and HLVG, Gradient Exterminator  plus Noels Actions, ...  I also have  the cc-2014 and cc-2015 versions although I haven't installed the plugin's in those as I don't like the increased "cloud" integration of the later updates

Let me know what version you have and I will let you know where the various bits are installed on my machine....

Update:-

Russell replied

"First, make sure you have the 64-bit version of the plug-in… the 32-bit version won’t work with CC.
Second, CC has a different directory structure than earlier versions. You can simply put the plug-in file in the “Plug-ins” directory, as there is no longer a Filters directory."
I searched the program but could not locate "Plug Ins" - its simply not there. The nearest to it is Pluginsync.
Another issue - every time I tried to use CC2015 it would shut itself down after a a minute or two. I have given up and decided to stick with my tried and trusted Paintshop Pro.
Thanks to all for the input on this.

For CC 2015 and WIN 10 the plugins directory is in

program files/adobe/adobe photoshop CC 2015/plugins

If it shuts down without error try logging out of cloud and logging back in.

Just found out that now I have to pay for an upgrade to Gradientexterminator, must be because of WIN 10.

I don't use it anymore because I use DBE in Pixinsight.

Hi,

I'm running Gradient Xterminator on my Windows 7 pc with Adobe Photoshop CC.

Once you've unpacked the .8bf plug-in file, copy it into the clipboard and then go to:

Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop CC 2015 > Required > Plug Ins > Filters

and paste the GradientXterminator64.8bf file there. From memory, you'll have to key in your e-mail address and password to unlock GX.

I tried installing GX on my new Win 10 laptop but it requires a $19.95 purchase to work.

Hope this help.

Thanks to all but I gave up on Photoshop as every time I tried to use it I got a message "Photoshop has stopped working" and it shut down.

I use Paintshop Pro X8 and it does everthing I need as well as taking plug ins and there's no subscription.

Hi. I know this is an old thread but if anyone is having problems setting up Gradient Xterminator in the latest version of Adobe Photoshop CC (2020), here's how it's done.

Make sure you have the 64-bit version of GradX (GradientXterminator64.8bf) and copy into this location:

Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop 2020  >Required > Plug-ins > Filters

Start Photoshop and you'll see the GradX plug-in in the 'Filter' drop=list (RC-Astro). When you start it for the first time, you'll have to put in your original GradX password.

Definitely worth doing as Gradient Xterminator is still one of the best light pollution removal tools around.

Cheers,

Nik
