Uranus - First light with ZWO ASI224MC camera

I stayed up late to try to get a first image with my new ASI 224MC planetary video camera through my Celestron C14 scope and 2.5 x Barlow.

Given this was the first time trying a colour camera with Firecapture there was a lot for me to learn. I took an image via a IR 720 nm pass filter to give myself a luminance sub and added this (ca. 45%) to a colour image. I've applied a lot of sharpening and de-noising to these captures in Registax 6 so I hope I have not introduced artifacts. I have not tried to align the image north-south. In the IR pass image, it looks as though Titan is about 3.3cm in the 7 O'clock position relative to the planet, but doesn't show up in the composite.

Well done John!

You've caught the polar brightening as well as some banding - a very good outcome!

I've presumed the time & date you gave are UT's & with this & the rough orientation I've given the WinJupos simulation means that the 2 moons I've brought out in your image are Ariel at 7 0'clock & Umbriel about 3 o'clock. (no Titan with Uranus! ;))

That is absolutely fantastic. Sterling work right there. I'm gonna have a go at Uranus with ASI120MC and Planeta later if the skies clear here. I can only hope to get something even close to as good as that. Thanks for sharing.

Great pic!

I was able to find the moons in photo paint. You might try something like this:

Create a circular mask around the planet (it can have a wide margin)

Invert the mask

Stretch the histogram until the moons appear, the background will become grey

move the black point until the background matches that around the planet.

You can tweak the histogram.

Clear the mask

For images where the moons are more obvious, you can just mask around them and use the same technique. I did this to bring out Mars and Regulus on my shots of this morning's conjunction.
