Moon + planetary alignment this morning!

Recommended Posts

Rose at 6.20am this morning to look for the crescent moon high in the SE from the bedroom window and greeted by splendid alignment of planets. Brilliant Venus left of the moon and further down Jupiter much fainter by comparison. Tried some snaps but mostly blurred through camera shake. HeavensAbove showed Mars near Jupiter with Mercury close to the horizon but not seen. Only Saturn, still in the evening sky absent. Quite a view and around all week as the moon 'slides' down through the planets each morning:-)

Woke at 5am and eastern sky crystal clear and dark - a beautiful sight. In descending order Venus, Regulus, crescent moon, red Mars and finally Jupiter best seen in 10x50 bins. Too early to see Mercury as unrisen. Awoke again at 6.45am with a bright dawn sky and only Venus, moon and Jupiter obvious and Mercury unseen even through bins.

Keep watching tomorrow morning as the the moon moves near to Jupiter/Mars duo :-)

Wonderful views this morning. The baby alarm clock went off at around 5.30am and it looked clear so I went for a walk up onto Molesey Heath at around 6. There was some cloud near the horizon and a little misty haze around, but I had lovely views, with Mercury nicely visible above the cloud later on. There is a low horizon up on the Heath, it's the same place I observed the transit of Venus from.

It was very peaceful up there, no one around and flocks of geese, ducks and other birds flying off to start their day. It was a very nice way to start mine.

I got to see this in all it's glory! It was so cool because just about 06:00 we had a massive power outage, it was completely dark out! No street lights, my neighbors 24/7 porch lights, and the haze from the city were gone. I only wish I could have known it was coming and had my stuff set up...it was awesome!

Seen it 06:36 bst. Venus top right, jupiter next down left, mars next dimmer, mercury about 6-7 degree up above the horizon - found easily by following the diagonal down. Astonishingly the first time I've seen mercury in a morning from uk.

I am happy for you Kev. And for myself seen Mercury this morning through a gap in the clouds. Very bright.

Re the alignment. 7am venus jupiter (no mars), just about visible mercury.

Btw re my comment above - ive been doing this now for 54 years so that was a big tick in the box.
