By and large, a broadband-filter is considered better for galaxies, as the narrowband-filters can block out too much light. You may find some of this useful:

Both of these are by David Knisely, accepted as one of the most knowledgeable people with filters.

The more information you can find out about a particular galaxies spectra, the better you'll be able to figure out what filter would be best.
