Error using Nexstar handset extension cable

Hi folks,

I'd appreciate some help, i recently purchased a 30 foot extension cable from 'Astronomiser' for a Nexstar handset on a CG5GT mount. Unfortunately it produces a "No Response 17" error message when connected and the mount does not respond. I tried connecting a powertank instead of mains power, and it briefly worked before showing the same message again.

The Celestron site Says the error code may be due to a power supply with insufficient amps (less than 2.5A) but my supply is 5A and battery should be fine as it is a Celestron/Skywatcher Powertank.

Unfortunately Astronomiser has not responded to my queries so I may just have to send it back, but I'd like to try and get it to work first.

Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks

Rob

It may just be too long. Having said that I've used a longer ethernet lead to control my Skywatcher mount with the handset.

I'd wait for the astronomiser to reply as he may have some bright ideas or want you to conduxt some tests before sending it back.

Good luck

James

Hi Rob,

Although I don't have one, from what I've seen, it appears to be similar to the Skywatcher Synscan hand-set (which I have), that basically uses an RJ45 connector to connect the handset to the mount, feeding power from the mount to the handset, with control signals coming back ??

I've successfully used a 10 metre, standard Cat5e network cable to replace the 'curly' lead that comes with it. But you must ensure it is a non crossover cable...

Having said that, you say that it appeared to come to life but stopped again, which makes me suspect that the ends haven't been properly crimped, so there is a significant voltage drop down the cable.

If you know someone with a crimper, ask them to re-crimp, to see if that fixes your issue.
