Fomalhaut is spectacular in my 15 x 70 bins!

Although it's low in my sky (I'm at 37 N latitude, this star is fairly bright. It seems to be the brightest star after Vega. In the bins, it has a fiery appearance that changes from white to green to yellow. I think this is caused by me looking through a thicker part of the atmosphere. It reminds me of Antares, which is about the same declination. It changes from yellow to orange to green. Very cool!

I love looking at individual stars, the brighter and more famous ones like formalhaut. Like u said I just love the colours, Antares is my favourite, just love the red and orange ones, Betelgeuse and arcturus also, they r so awesome.thanks darren.

It's even lower for us (rises to just over 7 degrees here). Fomalhaut I find is a good guide to sky conditions: when the atmosphere is clear it looks white and very bright indeed; it seems to look even brighter because it's so far away from anything of comparable magnitude. With a bit of horizon murk it is still conspicuous but has a yellowish tint and flickers noticeably, when the air is full of haze and muck it can be dimmed to look like a 2nd or 3rd mag star, often varying noticeably as the haze swirls in front of it.
