August 30, 2015: filaments galore

Recommended Posts

Just had a peek at the sun with the SolarMax-II 60mm, and the disk is riddled with filaments. The proms on the eastern limb are still going strong, but the hedgerow to the north seems to be lifting a little, and grows fainter. The large complex prom in the south seems to be growing brighter, and some low structures seem to be appearing behind it on the limb. Maybe a big AR lurks there.

Several plage areas are also present.

Got some good viewing in myself earlier, Michael. As you report, lots of interesting filaments all over the disc.

Very little, if any, sunspot activity, though. Prolly suffering from withdrawal since the huge AR2403 has gone 'over the edge' but I could see nothing at all in white light. Ha views made sure there was no disappointment, however. :-))

Currently we're clouded over. But supposed to clear out and give us 4(!) clear nights. With low temperatures in the mid 60'sF.

If you don't have this bookmarked already, here's an excellent web-site for us who enjoy solar astronomy and auroras too:

Sunny days,

Very useful site, indeed. Unfortunately, the Netherlands are not well-placed for aurora watching. I had hoped for a chance in Scotland, but neither the sun nor the weather were cooperative (no surprises there, then ;))
