First Solar Shots

Hey all,

      After purchasing an 8" reflector, i decided to convert my old 6" into a solar scope.  I wasn't expecting much since it is not a dedicated Coronado or HA scope, but I was pleasantly surprised by the results.  Also, its was quite a strange feeling taking the telescope out in broad daylight. 

First shot was with my iPhone afocal with 20mm lens

Second was with a Starshoot webcam, 1000x stacked

Nothing to complain about there for a first attempt.  I suspect for the second you may need to work on focus a bit.  Lots of practice required

Thanks James, focusing is much more difficult than I thought.  Computer screens and bright sun are not a good mix, so some sort of light shield will be necessary next time.

Very nice start. shading the laptop is essential for getting good focus, a good size cardboard box will do the job

I've even been known to sit with the laptop under a blanket.  I'm sure I get some funny looks, but the positive side is that I can't see them

Nice work. The afocal shot with the iPhone is very good, the second indeed does look a bit out of focus, but not much

Nice start especially the top shot. Yes light shield will help a lot, it can be really tough to focus without one. You can probably even just use a box or brolly.

Thanks everyone.  The light box is definitely something I will be using the next time I go out.  I never realized how enjoyable it is to view the sun until I came to this forum and saw the amazing images posted.
