Polar Finder App

Recommended Posts

I've just downloaded the polar finder app as suggested in 'making every photon count', but the programme is much simpler with just two dials, time to and from the next 'peak' and no controls or ways of setting my location.

It is also semi-transparent so I can't read it properly as the desktop shows through!

Is there a simple calculator online that will tell me where on the 'clock' to put polaris?

Old app worked, new polar scope was excellent but I can see reticle illumination being my next project.

I managed to get 70 second subs (better than what i was normally getting at 30s) and I'm sure that my single-handed adjustment while waving torch method didn't get polaris anywhere near on the dot, so 90 or even 120 seconds may be achieveable!

Hi Stub,

Have you seen this?

Polar scope illuminator

Works on an AVX mount too.

Regards

Wow - I've been looking for something like this to illuminate the PA reticle on my AVX for a while now. But wouldn't you know, I can't find anyone who carries it in the US   Why Celestron or anyone else would manufacture a polar scope without illumination is beyond me since there's a very small window of oppurtunity at twighlight to see both Polaris and the reticle at the same time. So there you are with one hand trying to wave a red flashlight in front of the PA scope while looking through the EP and then when it's time to make adjustments it's impossible to hold the light and turn the knobs at the same time!

I've got to get one of these Skywatcher polar scope illuminators - does anyone know where they might be available in the US?

A bit of google-work shows that a dim red LED centred in the end hole should do the job. Some fun designs, even one on here using plumbing fittings!

For a few minutes use each evening, I think I'll go with a lithium button cell and keep it small.
