Nagler 31mm vs ES 82° 30mm

Guys

I have a dilema. Having purchased the most excellent, ES 30mm 82°. I find myself with the opportunity to purchase an enthusiastically used Nagler for about the price of a new ES eyepiece....

This would take up residency in an unfashionable backwater of the.......

Any thoughts??

From the reviews I've read, I doubt there is much difference unless you are going to be really, really picky.

I got my Nagler 31 for a silly price otherwise I think I'd be quite happy with an ES30 / 82. I don't use it much to be honest because much of the time the local modest LP means that skies look darker at a little more magnification and the Ethos 21 delivers that.

Hi Paul I've owned and used both but strangely I have neither at the moment .Im a big ES fan i own all the 100 degree EP's but out of the 2 I would choose the nagler.I found the background sky to be slightly darker and that made a difference when observing galaxies, saying that tho I thoroughly enjoyed the ES and it did 95% equally as good as th nagler.I think you may have to buy the nagler and compare them to see which suits you best ,I hope this helps

Thanks guys

I will spend most of my viewing time under good, but not exepionally dark sky. And, yes, I do struggle a bit with a lightening of the background on all but the really good nights.

I had the 30mm Meade and the Nagler 31mm together for a while and of course being a Tellyholic the Meade went. I think the Meade which element wise is the same as the ExSc is a very good eyepiece, it is only when you start to get faster scopes that you see any differences at the edges. In fact the Meade had less edge distortion that the Nagler but for me the 31mm is just the better eyepiece, not much in though.

I've owned both the ES30 and TV31 and out of the two I would choose the Nag every time. This said though I no longer own either preferring to use a SW Nirvana 28 as the exit pupil is modest in all of my scopes meaning the background sky isn't too washed out but still allowing me to fit most of the larger DSO in the fov.

Tough call but congratulations on being in a position to contemplate having both! Certainly a good way to compare the two. I spent a lot of time thinking about these two EPs about a year back and only the appearance of a second hand Nag decided it. If memory serves, the ES weighs more than 1.4kg!

You could do with a comparison session between the two! Saves money. Shame we are not closer as I have the same scope and we could set them up side by side. Are you attending a star party soon? You might be able to try a Nagler if someone had one handy (likely!).
