Quantum Physics tomorrow (Thu)

Quick heads-up, BBC4 tomorrow, 9 o/c Jim al-Khalili on quantum physics, first of a two parter, finishing next Thursday. It's a repeat, but if anyone missed it the first time round it might be worth picking up.

If you want total intellectual overload, BBC4 at the Proms have the first part of J S Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, again finishing next Thursday.

Bliss!

I will watch it, at least part, but he is not my ideal presenter physicist. Somehow I seem to find something else to do or watch when it is him.

I can listen to and watch Michiuo Kaku happily all day, but not quite Jim al-Khalili.

Funny that Ronin, I'm the opposite.

I think it comes down to the fact that a Jim al-Khalili book on quantum physics was really the first one I had read that I didn't have to work hard with. I really like his style and narrative and probably because of that much of the information stuck which made any further reading easier too. Same goes for his tv appearances.

Kaku on the other hand(who I do like) is more of a novelty.

I do enjoy listening to al-Khalili's programme on Radio 4, "The Life Scientific".

I vaguely remember listening to his QP programme when it was on before, but like most things at my age, I've forgotten much of it! I'll probably have a look and decide whether it is worth continuing.

Just one of those things, some styles you like some you don't.

I actually suspect it is not style or content but some voices just make me want to find anything else to watch/listen to. There are programs I watch until a presenter comes on then I go looking for the remote fast. What they are introducing never comes into it, I just do not want to hear their voice.

I find I am getting to be a full member of the grumpy old mens society.

One recent astro talk I went to I walked out after 10-15 minutes, how I lasted that long I have no idea.  I had doubts at 7 or 8 minutes.

I think I waited just to be sure it was really that bad, sort of it cannot remain this bad, give it another 5 minutes it might improve.

It didn't, I departed.

Agreed. I like JaK too. Find Michiuo Kaku a bit 'vague'.

That was a good evenings viewing, the history behind qp was interesting and I got a bit closer to geting my head round the theory, still a long way to go :-) The horizon on Mars was interesting but I kept getting distracted by the Cooke refractor in the background on the verbal links so I missed alot of what was said :-)

Annoyingly I dozed off for about 15 min or so during the QP prog. Nothing wrong with the prog or JaK it was just me needing down time.

The Bach did provide a good limbering up before the program though. Next week is part two with the D min Chaconne. If you can get your head around that, quantum physics will be a doddle  .

Bouncing this to remind people that part two of both programs are on tomorrow, the Proms at 7.30 and Jim a-K at 9.00. There's also a Horizon repeat, 40 Years on the Moon, following.

That's what I like to see, a flavour of culture drifting through the Forum.

Warmly welcomed too.

On the question of presenters voices, irrelevant really, however, I will say.

I can't stand Michael Owens football commentary voice.

Sorry to Dave for my slight  topic deviation .

Last nights Horizon was right up my alley, thought it was a good intro to the multiverse.

It's probably my favourite cosmological and quantum based topic. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

If anyone would like to explore some of the topic matter in the show further then I can totally recommend the book The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos by Brian Greene which covers a lot of what was mentioned and more in a relatively easy to read way.
