So here's my latest...

Quite chuffed with this one, I'd say it's my best yet.  15 or so (I forget how many) subs, 300s at ISO 1600, darks, flats and bias, equipment as per sig, modded DSLR at prime focus, Pixinsight.  It's also the first proper outing for my new AZEQ6GT mount, so I'm well pleased with those small round stars.  Small coma still showing in the right hand corners (those are the frame edges), I need to get that nailed down.

I've deliberately presented it upside down since I figure it highlights the dynamics of the structure in the cloud rather than leading to debates about whether it looks like a pelican or not !

The Pelican Nebula (IC 5070/5067) is an H II region associated with the North America Nebula in the constellation Cygnus. The gaseous contortions of this emission nebula bear a resemblance to a pelican (presented here upside down), giving rise to its name. The Pelican Nebula is located near to first magnitude star Deneb (off to the left), and is divided from its more prominent neighbour, the North America Nebula (off to bottom right), by a molecular cloud filled with dark dust.

The Pelican is much studied because it has a particularly active mix of star formation and evolving gas clouds. The light from young energetic stars is slowly transforming cold gas to hot and causing an ionization front gradually to advance outward. Particularly dense filaments of cold gas are seen to still remain, and among these are found two jets emitted from the Herbig–Haro object 555. Herbig Haro objects are jets emitted during a short-lived active stage of star formation and last about 100,000 years - this one is at the end of the thin darker trunk like structure that projects to the right from near the bottom of the most prominent wave front in this image.

Millions of years from now this nebula might no longer be known as the Pelican, as the balance and placement of stars and gas will leave something that appears completely different.

Thanks for watching, comments welcome,

Cheers

thanks very much guys !

Excellent shot, great detail and subtle colours. Is the Herbig Haro object visible?

I think just about, although at the expense of showing the deficiencies in my photo in extreme close up!  See the slightly lighter patches ringed that run NNE/SSW here, I think that's it:

I found out about them here - http://www.astro-photo.nl/deepsky/nebulae/herbig-haro-555-in-the-pelican-nebula.  If you click through on the photo twice you get a clear picture.

That is beautiful!! I can't see your signature since I'm reading this using Tapatalk. Would you mind telling me what scope you're using?

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry guys, been away for a couple of weeks, thanks for all the nice comments !

Very nice Stuart...  Did you use a filter?

Nice to see a really nice DSLR image, gives me hope! Tim

edit...just noticed, theres lots of 'nice's' in my post, which is nice!

no filters - it's a modded DSLR.  It was from a dark sky site though

rotate it 90 left and you will see the rabbit facing left to right.

oh my word, yes, I see it !  the dark dust lanes make a nose and sticky-up ears !

I've got lots of new raw data from the last couple of weeks, so watch this space as I get round to processing it
