Extension lead question

Recommended Posts

Hi I wonder if anyone can tell me what cable and plug I need to extend the lead on my skywatcher auto focuser. I have looked on the forums but some say rj 11 and some say rj10. Will a telephone hand set extension lead work ?....Thanks in advance....Geoff

Didn't see this the first time around.  The question has come up a few times recently.  It's a fun thing to find as none of the RJ designations actually fit properly (it's not a cable design for which the RJ specification was intended to be used) and in particular RJ10 isn't formally recognised and therefore may not be interpreted the same way by the vendor and purchaser :)  If what you've got is a four-way cable with a four-way connector at each end wired straight through, then you should be good.  Sometimes people call them RJ9 and sometimes RJ-something else too.

I think the description that will get you the right thing is a 4P4C cable.  It is the same as a telephone handset extension cable as far as I'm aware.

Thanks James, I got an 8 mtr Telephone hand set extension which has 4 wires and I have tried it and it works fine. The only thing is you can only get coiled ones which are quite heavy and need supporting to stop it pulling the plug from the socket...
