7mm DeLite - quick first light report (with MarkV)

Recommended Posts

My setup is a Borg89ED with Baader MarkV Binoviewer.

1. Eyepiece

Firstly, the eyepieces themselves are very nice to handle, they are a good size to sit in your hands and they are very lightweight compared to a panoptic24 for example. The size is nice and they should be easy to keep hold of in the dark and cold when I am tired.

The fit and finish is excellent, they feel really well made and the eyecup adjustment is smooth as silk.

2. Mark V Binoviewer

The DeLite fitted into the MarkV without issue, the undercut had no effect on the lock mechanism and everything was nice and tight

Merging the image was no issue either.

3. Eye placement

The DeLite suffers no kidney bean effects at all, you can place your eye anywhere and the view is nice an clear.

When I got the Delos, there was a period of playing with the adjustable eyecup to get the distance to the glass right but no such issue last night.

4. FOV

Actually, I quite liked the 62 degree FOV. It was easy to position my head so that I got the full FOV (to the edge) in both eyes and I did not have to push my head into the eyepiece. This makes viewing comfortable and immersive.

5. Targets

Saturn - It was early so I started on Saturn which came through nice and sharp, I could see the color band across the planet and a couple of moons.

Albireo – Stars were sharp and the colors were bright and clear. Surrounding stars could drift to the edge of view and stay clear and round.

Double double – sharp and split.

Moon - I am not a big moon fan, but I enjoyed the color tones and the sharpness of the mountain ranges, I compared with a pair of 4.5mm Delos and the DeLite gave a more pleasing view (due to less mag probably) but I lingered for a while anyway – there was a lot of detail on offer even on full moon.

6. parfocal?

I found the focus point to be identical between the DeLite 7mm & Delos 4.5mm, the focus needed a small tweak when switching to the Pan24.

Conclusion

1.The view is comfortable and easy. You can concentrate on what you are observing.

2.I really like the size and weight.

3.Build quality is excellent (as you expect from TeleVue).

Very quick to report and a good one at that, clearly these were not packed with the normally free clouds that seem to come with everything these days. I like Matthew really need different focal lengths to get the best out of my scopes, we will have to wait and see what comes next.

...  The original 3 focal lengths have too much overlap with my current EPs but looking forward to the arrival of more models which might slot in.

Same for me Matthew. I'd consider moving my 4mm and 3mm Radians on if Delite's with that FL appear. Still unsure about being disloyal my 5mm and 3.5mm XW's though. I love those Pentax's

Can I add my thanks too. Although owning a Delite is some way off for me, it's great to read how others find TeleVue's new baby...especially compared to a Delos - also out of my range (I'm still at the buying used Radians and Panoptics stage, lol :) ). Good stuff, thanks!

One further point. I notice at closer inspection that the DeLite's have "JAPAN" engraved on the side unlike Delos which has "TAIWAN ROC" on the side.

Japanese factories must be back in business :)

The Radians,  Plossls, Nagler T6's and Powermates have always been produced in Japan. I'll bet Tele Vue are getting the Delite's made on the old Radian production line

Thye seem to use the Taiwan production facility for their larger eyepiece designs.

I don't know much if anything about Televue manufacturing sites, but all my Radians (6,8,10,12) are Taiwan ROC. I guess I must have later production runs - assuming TV moved to Taiwan manufacture after Japan?

My Plossls and Powermate are Japan.

I'll have to look up the company history - should be quite interesting from the little I've read about Al...

Sorry for slight thread DeRail :D

I believe that TV still maintain production capability in both Japan and Taiwan ROC.

I made a mistake in my above post though - my Radian's (which are recent ones) are both Taiwan ROC made. Sorry to cause condfusion :embarrassed:
