This is an older project that I had posted on a yahoo group years ago.  Arduino Uno's can be had for under $10 nowadays, and the motor shield for under $8.

Orion Accufocuser Arduino remote control

The is extremely simple, documented on the Yahoo Group “SGL Observatory Group”

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/sgl_observatory_automation/info

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/sgl_observatory_automation/files/OrionAccufocusInterface/

This also has an improved control applications created by Marc van Treek.

Writeup and instructions are in the pdf, which was too large to attach here.

Adding this link to the Arduino sketch on codebender, which makes the software setup and control trivial, too.

Or, for a controller that replaces the HC and provides much better contol of the DC motor, handheld + remote control, plus windows remote app, plus ASCOM driver, see

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mydcfocuserrelativedcfocuser

Looks like that can work with the Skywatcher motorised focuser kit, which is very interesting.
